I know what you are thinking. "Not another Invasion thread." I understand. This topic has been done to death on the crap, but hear me out. The attached video is a re-cap of the build up to "WWF InVasion" the Pay Per View. Even without WCW's "big name stars" along with ECW joining up to take out WWE and Vince McMahon, this storyline was entertaining and looked like it maybe going somewhere. When the group of WWF wrestlers came out to clean house only to turn around and reveal that they all shared a common past was a great moment in history. Vince begging for the old Stone Cold back. Saying he needed Steve Austin. The Undertaker getting the troops ready. Followed by Freddie Blassie. Classic. Stone Cold destroying the ECW/WCW guys in defense of the WWF. All great moments IMO. It could also be argued that this was the beginning of JBL, and Edge's rise to the top. Of course there were some not-so-great moments as well. OK maybe just Steph and her stupid little hat. So is this video making me see the Invasion angle leading up to the PPV through rose colored glasses? Or was this not that bad as it seemed?

Lot of things ruined it:
No BIG names. They should have signed Goldberg and Sting, and this thing would be completely different and better.
Steph becoming the ECW owner was the beginning of the end.
The inaugural brawl featured 10 guys, with 8 of them being WWE employees.
And Stone Cold becoming the leader of the alliance, getting his ass kissed by everyone at every opportunity.
After that, it was over with.

Overall, the Invasion angle was actually a good storyline in terms of making money for the company. It's just that it fell vastly short in that the expectation that this should've been the biggest angle in wrestling history and last 3-5 years.

I actually think the Invasion storyline started off really well and didn't go downhill until around Unforgiven.

What could have been. I still miss that time. It was new, it was exciting and it had potential.

Question: anyone knows the name of the "MECK UP" guy who appeared randomly during the Invasion?

I thought the Invasion had all the potential in the world, but I never could quite buy into Shane & Stephanie trying to put the WWF out of business. If the WCW/ECW alliance was headed by Paul Heyman and Eric Bischoff, that would have made a WORLD of difference. But I just couldn't suspend belief enough to buy Shane and Stephanie trying to kill off the WWF. The McMahon family IS the WWF/E, and I can't buy anyone in that family trying to kill it.

It got bad when the titles kept changing every show to the point I couldn't work out which tag titles the Dudleyz, Hardyz, Booker/Test had this week.

Lot of things ruined it: No BIG names. They should have signed Goldberg and Sting, and this thing would be completely different and better. There's your reason why Sting didn't sign. Goldberg, Nash, and the majority of the major stars not named DDP didn't sign, to paraphrase Kevin Nash, "Why should I sign with the WWF when I have a contract with Time Warner that runs thru 2002 and allows me to sit at home and collect $30, 000 a week to do nothing?"

the lack of the big names did kinda kill it since there weren't too many WCW guys that came over that were seen as main eventers back then so they needed to bring ECW in to even things up. Considering how ECW in general hated Bischoff and WCW it really didn;t make much sense to see them join forces so enter Steph to bring in a tie with Shane to try and force them into one unit.
personally i would have liked to see it turn out like they teased right at the start WWF/E vs. Shane's WCW vs. Heyman and ECW. Though at that point i think ECW had more recognizable names to the average WWF fanbase (cause the universe wasn;t around then) from their WWF days than the WCW squad did. which would make ECW look to be the greater threat not WCW.
then there was the switch early on when Vince realized the fans were cheering for Shane and Steph and by extension WCW/ECW instead of him and WWF since Vince had been in heel mode at that time and they were against him. he had to switch that over during the feud so the "good" guys of the WWF would be the ones cheered. (the exception to prove the rule of course being RVD whom they couldn;t make the fans boo no matter what to the point where even JR had to admit the cheers on air)
also didn;t help that Buff Bagwell was brought in for the first WCW match on WWF, wasn't that his only appearance in the whole thing?

The angle bombed for two reasons: 1) No big names, and 2) Vince cannot book a hostile takeover angle.
Look at how Bischoff booked the original nWo. They did not hit a WCW wrestler and run away like a coward. They gang attacked everyone. They were badass and it took someone more badass (Crow Sting) to take them out. That is why it worked. You don't book an invasion angle and have the invaders be cowards. Vince simply did not want to make the WWF look bad. Bischoff in 1996 did not care.
The big name part was the biggest reason. The fans wanted to see Hogan, Nash, Sting, Goldberg, DDP, Steiner, Hall, etc. They did not want to see a group headlined by Booker T and Lance Storm take on the WWF. It could have been the greatest booked storyline ever (which it wasn't) and it still would have been a disappointed given the lack of star power.

Well you have to give it up to the part of the WWE that makes those promo videos. They can make just about any storyline look compelling and interesting.

One of my all-time favourite hype packages.
Though I always find it funny that in the WWF locker room during the battle cry, they chose to put Perry Saturn with Moppy in the front row.

WCW/ECW should have gone over strong there. WWE should have put up a good fight but the show should have made the ECW/WCW into the new heels for at least the next year. They should have injured Austin only to have him come back 6 months or so later, it would have been huge and you didnt need the big names to get it over. You could have just as easily made your own big names off of the guys you had on roster.
But the sides became so skewed pretty quickly that not much else could have come from it.

I get what Sting is saying and cannot necessarily disagree with him, but what happened to Booker T would not have happened to Sting, no matter how hard Vince would've tried to "bury" him. Sting probably the most over talent WCW had at the time besides Goldberg and maybe Flair.
