Who else agrees that Stone Cold may very well have had his best year of wrestling entertaining wrestling matches in 2001. Sure he was a super over babyface in 98/99, and still had some good matches, but he was clearly a man in need of neck surgery. In 2001, he was mostly a heel, which was not to everyones taste-personally I thought it was awesome, but its hard to doubt how consistent a year Stone Cold has as a wrestler. He also seemed to take more risks with his repaired neck. He took ten German suplexes in a row from Benoit, he was hiptossed by Angle mulitple times outside the ring at Summerslam and chokeslammed through a table by Taker at Backlash. Its a pity that after such a great year that by his face run of early 2002, he was a burnt out, banged up, stale shadow of his former self. It just goes to show how much he put into 2001, knowing it might be his last year on top and it ended up taking it all out of him. Heres a list of just a few of the ridiculous amount of quality matches: (youtube em!) No Way Out vs Triple H Wrestlemania vs The Rock Cage rematch on Raw vs Rock Two man Power trip vs: Brothers of destruction on Backlash Y2J and Benoit on Raw Smackdown and Raw matches vs Benoit Stone Cold vs RVD vs Angle Summerslam vs Angle Unforgiven vs Angle Raw rematch vs Angle Survivor Series WWE vs WCE/ECW Grocery Store brawl vs Booker T www.411mania.com/wrestling/columns/88718/Against-The-Grain-10.26.08:-The-Heel-Turn-of-Stone-Cold.htmA great article about his heel turn

I agree he did have some great matches in 2001 but I am firmly in the "heel turn should have never happened" camp so no matter how hard I try I cannot look back on this as objectively as I would like to.

I thought the heel turn was awesome and it gave way to the Rock being the clearcut top face.

I totally agree, and I think it's mostly a result of one thing: Austin is a fantastic seller, and he couldn't sell very much as his invincible bad-ass face character.
Seriously, babyface comebacks against heel Stone Cold are the most exciting ones I've ever seen. He was just really really good at that.

I was a huge fan of his heel run in 2001. It was the only time I really enjoyed Austin's character.

Even as a mark I always cheered against him and don't even get me started on post-2003 Austin.

2001 Wrestler of the Year in my books. Easily Austin's best. two 5 stars classic (No Way Out, WM), two more masterpieces (Rumble, Summer Slam), TV match of the year (vs Beniot on SD), and runner up TV match of the year (Two Man Power Trip), and of course the Suvivor Series match. Brilliant stuff! One of the best years of any wrestler this decade, only HBK in 05 is likely ahead if i thought it over hard.

The heel turn was awesome, because it gave Angle a chance to shine as a babyface.

We may remember heel Austin for WHAT? but I will always remember him talking to his imaginary watch. God, I loved that for some reason.
Match-wise, 2001 was Austin's year. Character-wise, it was fresh, since how much more could you do with a face Austin? I was iffy on the Two Man Power Trip. Triple H being hurt was the cause of some of Austin's greatest matches (the Jericho/Benoit stuff). He made the Invasion palatable and put on some classics with Angle. Sadly, by October, the company should have pulled the trigger on an RVD/Austin feud (which I agree with Raven, would have been huge money). He started to fade after the rosters merged though.

Count me as another big fan of the Austin heel turn in 2001. As far as I was concerned, it revitalized a character that had grown very stale. He was an entertaining heel who could still deliver in the ring.
Business wise, it proved to be a mistake. But I'm glad they made it.

"HUGH MORRUS? HUMOUROUS? IS THAT SUPPOSED TO MAKE ME LAUGH? YOU'RE PATHETIC!" "What about me? What about Raven? Quote the Raven Nevermore. You make me sick!" Anyways, Austin 2001 takes a back seat to Austin Fall 1996-Summer 1997 in my book....but just barely.

Hair all greased back. I ain't got no hair to grease. But we ain't here to talk about my haircut. Do you trust Stone Cold!!

I never liked Austin more than I did when he was a heel in 2001. It was also definitely his best year for technical wrestling in about a decade.

He was still. 02 he was a top seller still with his What shirts as well. Austin didn't stop selling until he wasn't around. Even when he had a new shirt as GM or "Sherif Austin. He was top seller.
