For years Ive heard so many people trash this movie and say its terrible and I could never understand it because I really liked the film and have watched it many times. So please tell me why its so bad and dont just say its because the ending is confusing because yeah it is but that doesnt destroy the whole movie for me.

Personally i liked Burton's Apes (well, except for the ending), but I understand why others don't. In their defense, I did watch the remake before the original (big mistake) so maybe if I had something to compare it to, it wouldn't have been as good.
btw I still prefer the original.

The ending is a good place to start. Plus Mr. Rothman pressured Burton to rush through the production so things could not be cleaned up.
EDIT: Plus Rothman tinkered with the movie post production (including Elfman's score) which may have been a factor as to why it was a letdown.

Just saying you dont like the ending is a lame reason to trash it.

Just saying you dont like the ending is a lame reason to trash it. Tell that to people who hate No Country for Old Men.

Plus the fact that it's a film that didn't NEED a remake. The original was powerful enough, and unlike this film it had a great ending. I also think there were too many, "hey look at the monkey people, let's make them do monkey things!" Just very overwrought and at places VERY dull.

My only guess at to why the movie ended the way it did (besides it being more closely modelled to the book) is that they were planning for a sequel that didn't pan out for some reason.

The original was (IS) a classic that in no way, shape, or form needed to be remade. Burton's version isn't terrible, it's just totally unnecessary.

I liked it when I first saw it but it really doesn't have the Tim Burton feel to it.
Plus like Kash said it's a movie that didn't need remaking they could have easily just made a new movie set in the same universe as the originals but years later.

Tell that to people who hate No Country for Old Men. I never saw it and don't plan to but I heard people discussing it one time. It's a good movie, with a polarizing portion to it. It didn't bother me, but I think I was the minority there.

Theres tons of unnecessary remakes out there though. Including "The Day the Earth Stood Still" another Sci-Fi classic that FOX thought it NEEDED a remake.

I really don't see why people didn't like the ending. I thought it was pretty unexpected. According to Burton he tried to come up with one that could be just as shocking or more than the original.

Well saying it shouldnt have been remade just isnt a good excuse to dislike something in my book. I dont think Texas Chainsaw Massacre should have been remade but that has nothing to do pertainting to if I liked the remake or not.

Theres tons of unnecessary remakes out there though. And Tim Burton has made two of them, with a third on the way!
