Yes I know this thread is a blatant rip-off of the dead malls one, but it got me thinking. Since there aren't any malls that have closed down near me to get nostalgic about, I started thinking about the fact that there are (were) a ton of movie theaters in my area that are gone.
Anyone have any dead cinemas they miss a little?

I have a dead drive-in. It got closed a few years ago. There was enough popular demand to keep it open. But, they stated that the new project would be more beneficial and financially successful.
They have to add anything to where the old drive-in resided.

The old dollar theater we used to have close to my house. It was awesome. It'd show second run movies and i spent a lot of dollars there.

There's a whole website of operating and dead Drive-Ins with pics. It's simultaneously fascinating and depressing.

Not really....... There is a defunct drive-in that I thought was the bee's knees though. I don't even know exactly where it was or what it was called, I was six. It left an imprint on my psyche somehow. That's a good drive-in.
I do, however, appreciate a theater that's "dead." I like the big movie atmosphere without the big movie crowd. Sometimes crowds are fun, other times, it's a bunch of ill behaved kids and chatty cathys that can make the process maddening.
The last time I went out and saw Star Wars with my Pops, we were witness to a loud ass couple that was probably in their late forties having at least a ten minute debate on whether or not they were going to get snacks from the concession stand.
Naw it's alright, I don't really care to see Kirk's backstory. You two obviously have to hash this out. If I were you, I'd eat if I were hungry and not eat if I were not hungry. Just saying.

First off I would like to say I think the Drive-In is due for a comeback and I would go to one if there were one around here. The things I hate about movies, girlfriends with cellphones texting the whole movie away because their boyfriend dragged them to a comic book movie against their wishes, little kids brought to movies that are way above their understanding level so they resort to running around and wrestling in the aisle as oppose to sitting down and watching the movie(this happened to me at The Two Towers and I swore to never go to a theater again.) cramped seating, complete lack of privacy, and all the other annoying things theater patrons do. I would much rather sit in my own car and watch a movie where I wouldnt be bother by anyone and I would be free to smoke if I wished to.
As for dead theaters, there are like 3 in Wausau and now the megaplex has a movie monopoly. According to local legend, the mega theater chain bought out the other theaters and closed them to eliminate competition. I find that sad because one thing I miss about LA is the $3 theater, where you could see second run movies in an near empty theater for only $3, leaving more money for snacks. They need on of those around here but it would just get gobbled up by megaplex, the evil corporation that owns every theater in northern Wisconsin.

Teller Arms Twin Cinemas closed about 3 years ago. Right by my house and very awesome service. All the crew relocated to the Regal Cinema 16 which is across the city

Likewise, actually in the last few years three theaters here have shut their doors and we have to drive a town over in either direction to go to the movies...not too bad but still.

Village Cinema in Frankston. Had two cinemas on each side of the Nepean Hwy. Now closed of course. The cinemas on the beach side is now a restaurant which I have not dined at. And the ones on the other side have just been abandoned. Seen plenty of classic (and not so classic) films at those cinemas: Flight of the Navigator (first ever), Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (yes the Disney one), Jurassic Park and it's sequel, Speed, True Lies, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Die Hard with a Vengeance, Toy Story, The Star Wars trilogy when it was re-released in 97, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Starship Troopers, Wild Things, The Mask, Dumb & Dumber and the list goes on. A big Multiplex Cinema opened in Frankston toward the start of the decade which brought the downfall of Frankston Village. It did try to stay open but it was a difficult task, They had to close two screens for cost reasons. And they even put a big sign on the beach side saying 'YES WE ARE STILL HERE - FRANKSTON VILLAGE'. But they finally shut down in 2005. The last film I saw at that cinema: S.W.A.T starring Colin Farrel and Samuel L Jackson .... Yeah not a good one to end with

Apparently, the town I livein used to have a Cinema, but that was before I moved here. I heard it was pretty crappy, though. I also heard a story that the woman who "runs" the town (i.e. a millionaire who owns the grocery chain based here) once took her grandkids to a PG-13 movie there. She apparently left moments later, claiming the movie was definitely not PG-13 and almost immediately, the movie was pulled.

Here in Kansas City on the Missouri side we have quite a few movie theaters. the one I worked at was built in the early 90s and still up. I think it was the first megaplex in the midwest. It put an older one that I'd never been in out of business.
We have two different drive-ins too. I'm not sure how old they are.

We (San Antonio) lost our Drive In back in 2007 due to punk ass vandalism. Now its a library. Atleast its not a mini mall, starbuck, or other cliche.

The Cinema in my town closed last Christmas.
Granted the owners had just opened a new 6 screen cinema in our new Mall and everyone who worked at The Regent Cinema 4 now has jobs there but still it's sad to see the Cinema I've seen the majority of my film going life just lay there empty.

The cheap theater in our town sustained some fire damage from a nearby restaurant burning down. The damage to the theater was too much though and they had to tear it down.
Studio 28 closed down about 10 months ago. At one point (I think 1988) it was certified the largest megaplex in the world, having more screens than any other theater (20). It was my favorite theater growing up and the one we went to because it was closest to our house at the time. But with the rise of a new mall that opened up about 10 years ago that had a theater of its own, and several other theaters opening on the other sides of town (not to mention the overall decline of the neighborhood in which Studio 28 was situated in), Studio 28 had to shut down last November. As of right now the building still just sits there, and last I heard there weren't any plans to do anything with it.

Most of the theaters I have seen movies at are closed now. The East Ridge 6 (which was the first theater I ever went to) closed in 1999 and sat abandoned for several years finally both it and the empty Winn-Dixie store next to it was torn down and replaced by a 16 screen movie theater (in fact the last time I went to a movie was at that theater in 2005 a month or two after it opened) The Hamilton Place 9 that I only went to once was closed and replaced by Barnes and Noble. The $1.00 Four Sqaures 3 was in an office park and eventually got turned into office space as well. The one I have the most memories of though is the $1.00 Highway 58 theater. It only had one screen but I spent many dollars up there plus it is about the only theater I would buy drinks and popcorn at becuase it was reasonably priced. Just before it closed though it had gotten to the point they never had anything good there. There are only two theaters I have seen movies at that are still open. As far as drive-ins go I remember one day I had been out at Fall Creek Falls State Park which is in the middle of nowhere. I got hungry and wound up stopping at a McDonalds in a small town called Dunlap TN on the way back. Across the street from the McDonalds was this drive in screen. Sadly it closed a few months later and when I went back again they were building a Walgreen's there. However in spring 2007 they opened a new drive in about 20 miles from where I live. I never have been there but sometime I have got to check it out.

We used to have a drive in in Braintree, it closed down about 20 years ago.
Right behind it they built a gorgeous new cinema that was state of the art in 1992, they even had a mini taco bell that sold chicken soft tacos 10 for $10.
Now its completely dead most of the time since they built ANOTHER state of the art cinema in neighboring Randolph
