We used to have tons around my area, not sure why the early ones closed, one was half wrecked during the Second World War and the post-war depression and subsequent disinterest meant that it was never repaired, but it still operated, which is amazing, not only because it stayed open until the late 80's, but because the organ was bombed to hell and the place still continued to show silent films following the war! A big 15 screener opened about 10 years ago, and this put to an end many old cinemas with the outdated 2 screen setups, which is a shame, because I prefer the old retro feel that they gave. When I say tons, I mean TONS, and the furthest one was literally a 15 minute drive. I live in a relatively new town (about 70 years old) so I guess all the redevelopers got overexcited or something. Only one left now though.

There's quite a few in the area, mainly because of the 17-screen theater that's in the mall.
All were choked out by that one theater (a total of at least 3, if not more).

We used to have a drive in in Braintree, it closed down about 20 years ago. Right behind it they built a gorgeous new cinema that was state of the art in 1992, they even had a mini taco bell that sold chicken soft tacos 10 for $10. Now its completely dead most of the time since they built ANOTHER state of the art cinema in neighboring Randolph AND another in Dedham just opened. I really miss the Quincy Center theater. In the summer of 1989 my friends and I went to see Batman there at least 8 times! And yeah, Mac. I'm pretty surprised that the Braintree one is still going. Remember it's predecessor? It was in what used to be the Circuit City next to the Plaza.

There's a drive-in theater close to me, and it's right next to a bowling alley
Saw a lot of good movies there like Congo & Good Burger. Used to go all the time as a kid. It's still open but I prefer just a regular theater these days.
