Yo. It's been several months since I said that I'll write some anime reviews and post them here, and methinks it's time for me to do the writing and the posting stuff. The original plan was for me to review only crappy stuff I see in anime, but I found out that was slightly harder than I had thought (honestly, there are a lot of bad anime out there, but few things that could be the equivalent of someone giving birth to a hand.) Anyway... for now, I'll start with a few normal reviews on stuff that's not exactly Ani-Crap, though my first review might be a bit /d/ for some people. I think. A is for Anime, episode 1! ...it's not exactly anime, but it's the first review! Katawa ShoujoKatawa Shoujo, or Disability/Cripple Girl, is an English visual novel made by Four Leaf studios using the Ren'Py visual novel engine. The story is set in the fictional Yamaku High School for the disabled. It's main character, Hisao Nakai, a new student there after being hospitalized due to an accident and a heart defect. And then there are five (or six) girls, each of them with a disabilty. In the end, it's up to the player to decide Hisao's path, in making friends, fitting in, falling in love, or making him some sort of shut-in. Something like that. Well, now that I finished doing the introduction, I should start posting the part where I actually review this, and stuff... and, er, honestly, I'm only 50% finished. On the other hand, now that I posted this, It's 100% certain that I'll finish this review. And if I don't... I'll eat a hat!

Busy cooking and writing and saving the world, and other stuff. Be done in a few hours or something.

Katawa Shoujo/Disability Girls?
I'm starting to think that not even disabled girls are immune from the slimy grasp of hentai tentacles....

Okay, well, time to start the review: Gameplay: Well, it's safe to say that there's not much gameplay here. Close to zero. Or zero. To those unfamiliar with visual novels, it's pretty much reading a lot of text and then picking two to three choices during certain moments in the game. Depending on your choice/s, your relationship with other characters will advance a little. Katawa Shoujo's not complete yet, and there's only a demo available that covers "Act 1" which kind of gives a sense of hope that there will be an Act 2 and beyond. Act 1 is 7 seven days in Hisao's life in his new school, and there are several paths you have to choose before the seven days are up. Depending on your choices, Hisao will either spend his time on the 7th day with one of the female characters, which can be considered a happy ending to the demo, or he gets drunk and lonely, if you pick the wrong answers. P.S. There are no "adult" scenes in Act 1. The full game however will have some, and they can be skipped if the player does not want to see them. Score: n/a. There's no gameplay, duh. Next: the story, and the characters, because I'm lazy.

What's this girl's disability? Deaf mute. Is your character able to learn sign language to communicate with her?

Is your character able to learn sign language to communicate with her? In the first act put out thus far she talks to you through her friend Misha, she also passes you a note or two. It's thought that later in the game one of the paths will be you learning sign so you'll be able to confess your love to her one on one.

Okay, time to continue the review~
The Story Hisao Nakai collapses from a heart attack after receiving a confession from the girl he likes. Hospitalized, Hisao's life is turned upside-down after the heart attack, and the discovery that he has arrhythmia. The long time he spent recovering in the hospital isolates Hisao from other people, including the girl that had confessed to him.
After being discharged, Hisao is transfered to Yamaku High School for the disabled where he meets his new classmates in his new environment. Something like that~
Act 1 is the first 7 days of Hisao's life in Yamaku, and how he adapts to his new life. All the main female characters are introduced, each of them with a certain disability. Like I said before, depending on the players choices, Hisao will spend his time on the 7th day with one of the 5 girls (not exactly -- for example, if you get Shizune's ending Misha is there with her).
--
Hmm... I have to say the story had surprised me a little. The title itself kind of gave me an awkward feeling when I started playing; honestly, something that translates to Disability Girl doesn't have much tact. I'm not sure if I'm using the word tact correctly but I think it's right. Anyway. The story of Katawa Shoujo is good -- above average, but not a 9 or a 10.
The idea itself was very interesting... I mean, one guy in a school and he's surrounded by girls. That's the basic idea of most harem anime/games, and dating sims. Katawa Shoujo uses that kind of harem setting and adds in the fact that the characters are disabled. I don't know how to say what I said in a more tactful manner, but that fact made the story interesting. However, that interesting-ness just a part of what made the story good; the characters and how the story developed is the more important thing in the story, I think.
Like I said, it's good, but if I had to give it a score it's not going to get a 9 or a 10. It's no The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle in terms of storyline, but it's good enough to interest me.

Why didn't you just finish the whole review, before starting the thread?
This Game/Manga/Anime hybrid is very stupid, and very disturbing. Reading more about this game, it's a eroge game, so it's going to contain sex. The fact their treating disabled characters as sex appeal is stupid. Some one will come along and say "Disabled people are allowed love too" but that thinking is what makes this game stupid, when you fall in love with someone, you don't think of their bad sides or Disablilites.
This game looks like it doesn't care about disability, and just uses it for pushing sexual fetishes.
From looking at the audience it's aimed at, it looks like it was made for the 4Chan community....WHY AM I NOT f***ING SURPRISED.
Stuff like this, is why people look down at the Anime community, Anime and Manga used to be seen as a artform, but now it's seen as a joke. Now people know why i'm sometimes not partial to the Anime/Manga industry.
