Why didn't you just finish the whole review, before starting the thread? This Game/Manga/Anime hybrid is very stupid, and very disturbing. Reading more about this game, it's a eroge game, so it's going to contain sex. The fact their treating disabled characters as sex appeal is stupid. Some one will come along and say "Disabled people are allowed love too" but that thinking is what makes this game stupid, when you fall in love with someone, you don't think of their bad sides or Disablilites. This game looks like it doesn't care about disability, and just uses it for pushing sexual fetishes. From looking at the audience it's aimed at, it looks like it was made for the 4Chan community....WHY AM I NOT f***ING SURPRISED. Stuff like this, is why people look down at the Anime community, Anime and Manga used to be seen as a artform, but now it's seen as a joke. Now people know why i'm sometimes not partial to the Anime/Manga industry. Must you? Every time? Really? We get it. It's like you're trying to make people feel bad for what they like now, and that's way lame.

Now people know why i'm sometimes not partial to the Anime/Manga industry. You're very badly mistaken about this game. It's not about anything that you seem to think it is, it's not disturbing in anyway, it's not a joke fetish game. It's a love game pure and simple, it's a very well written story about getting over hangups and asking yourself what exactly is normal. All these girls have real personalities, so you're not falling in love with the disability, you're falling in love with the girl. After the first go through you never even think about their problems physically, you just think how cool they are as people. Yeah, there will be sex, but who cares, why such a hang up on sex. Again, you're not having sex with a disabled girl, you're having sex with a girl you love, that's what this game is about, love. It's a sweet and charming game, that quite frankly I would actually recommend people play just so people can get a clue that folks that are "different" are really not all that different at all. It's that good.

And I don't see why you think it's yours, either. I don't care to play the game, but I will defend to the death the people that do want to. At any rate, I'm not trying to play internet tough guy, but jesus, if you don't like something, stay the hell out of it's thread. It's easy, I promise.

^^^It's better to say your opinions in a thread, that is discussing the topic, instead of opening a new thread. They're discussing Katawa Shoujo, and i'm jumping in with my opinion. It's a sweet and charming game, that quite frankly I would actually recommend people play just so people can get a clue that folks that are "different" are really not all that different at all. But why make it a eroge game? That's the problem I have with this game.

But why make it a eroge game? That's the problem I have with this game. Why? It's not a rape game or anything, it's not wacky fetish stuff either. Most of the love scenes are going to be very light in content anyway, and if even that is too shocking there will be an open to turn it off all together and just be "and then they made love" blackout.

I was hoping we were going to rate pretty girls in wheelchairs, missing an arm, ect. This topic is kind of a letdown bro. Well, if you're talking about missing an arm, there's a character here that's missing two. And another character missing two legs. Does the one with the missing legs hop onto the back of the one with the missing arms and combine to become an unstoppable force of kung-fu? /best worst martial arts movie ever!

From looking at the audience it's aimed at, it looks like it was made for the 4Chan community....WHY AM I NOT f***ING SURPRISED. . If you talk about them they will find us.

Why didn't you just finish the whole review, before starting the thread? One reason is that I'm lazy and do things at my own pace. Plus it keeps other people interested, I think. And several other reasons. In any case, I still have one class to attend right now, and I'll replay to BBMs post and then finish the review in an hour or so. Nya~

I think Erisi had mentioned some good points already, so I'll just continue and stuff... Honestly, it really looks like you're just focusing on the having sex with disabled characters bit, which is in reality a very minor part in the game, and then ignoring the part where the main character learns how to fit in his new environment and cope with his medical condition bit. See, that's pretty much the most important part of the game. You're assuming that the game is about Hisao trying to have sex with the disabled female characters. Anyway, there's a slight difference in eroge and bishoujo games, the latter being Katawa Shoujo's genre/thing. Eroge is focused more on sex, lots of sex, and several fetishes. On the other hand, in bishoujo games the sex scenes are minimal, usually there's only one for each female character, and that's about it. Sometimes there's no sex scenes at all. The sex scenes can be skipped... sure, it won't stop people from not skipping them, but there's nothing wrong with that. I guess your thought is "then why add sex scenes then?" My answer would be: Why not? It's not taboo. Some people might see it that way, but that just seems like a fear of other people being insulted. I don't see their disabilities as sex appeal, but I'll still watch the sex scenes, if they do have one, because I like the characters. From looking at the audience it's aimed at, it looks like it was made for the 4Chan community....WHY AM I NOT f***ING SURPRISED. Yeah, just because people from 4chan made the game means that it mocks the disabled by having sex. Right now, you're just looking down on this game just because it's made in 4chan.

Okay, I forgot about this, so here: www.katawa-shoujo.com/The main site of Katawa Shoujo. You can download the demo/Act 1 for free there. There are no sex scenes, and since it's free methinks it doesn't break the rules here. I'll finish my review later, since I feel slightly lazy.

Okay. Time to finish this. The Characters: (I'm just copy-pasting the character info from the main site and wiki, because I'm lazy at the moment. My thoughts about them are in the next post.) Hisao Nakai: The main character of the story. Diagnosed with arrhythmia. Troubled over his months-long stay at the hospital after his heart almost gave out and trying to adjust to his new surroundings, he is trying hard to find his place in world. After being thrown into a new beginning, the chaotic circumstances have forced Hisao to rethink his apathetic disposition, especially regarding things like life, friendship and future. (left to right; Lilly Satou, Hanako Ikezawa, Rin Tezuka, Shizune Hakamichi, Emi Ibarazaki) Emi IbarazakiEmi is a short, pigtailed girl with light brown hair and forest green eyes. She has prosthetic legs as a result of having lost her legs in an accident and is amputated below the knee. She considers her misfortune a blessing, being able to perform as a star on the track and field team, although she seems to not be too fond of her short stature. She is always full of energy and values good diet and exercise, and is on friendly terms with the head nurse of Yamaku, who she promised to keep tabs on Hisao's exercise in exchange for having him as a running partner. Because of her running habits, however, she is constantly running around campus, especially in the halls, despite repeated warnings regarding the safety of others. She also meets Hisao this way by crashing into him, and despite her good intentions, she endangers Hisao's heart on more than one occasion. Despite this, Hisao warms up to her, feeling guilty whenever she pouts, equating her to that of a puppy. Emi is Rin's friend and roommate, who was paired up by the housing staff, since they complemented their disabilities well. Hanako Ikezawa Hanako, as a child, suffered in an accident in which her home was burned down and her father's life was taken. Much of her body was horrifically scarred from the incident and has left her traumatized. Her dark purple hair hangs down across the right side of her face and hides much of the damage. Because of the scarring, she is incredibly shy and has difficulty opening up to anyone except Lilly, whose blindness helps her cope with her appearance. She is another one of Hisao's classmates, but is frequently absent, preferring to spend time reading in the library. Her truancy is noted by Hisao as odd but seemingly accepted behavior which goes unpunished by their teacher Mutou. She usually spends her time in the school library, where there are few people to disturb her or interact with. Lilly SatouLilly is the class representative of 3-2, a class composed of blind and partially blind students (including Kenji), and has been blind herself since birth. The tallest member of the main female cast, she has long blonde hair and blue eyes. She is very polite and ladylike, not wanting to intrude on others' private life (including Hisao's reasons for being at Yamaku). It is also noted that she had previously attended a strict all-girls school. In contrast to Misha's fast-paced attitude to Hisao's transfer, Lilly takes things at her own relaxed pace, helping Hisao to adjust to school life in the midst of a busy festival. She is Hanako's close (and only) friend, who she regularly has lunch and tea with, as well as accompaning her when grocery shopping. She also knows Yuuko on a friendly basis. Shizune and Lilly has been see to not get along, perhaps due to the fact that direct communication between her and Shizune alone is not possible (as she cannot see Shizune's signs and Shizune cannot hear or speak to her). Rin TezukaRin is a girl with thalidomide arms. To make up for her lack of arms, she uses her feet to accomplish everyday tasks with surprising dexterity. She has short red hair and dark green eyes, and wears a boy's uniform to avoid awkward situations that would arise from using her feet while wearing a skirt. Instead, Rin's odd personality that can only be described as "unique" is what brings about awkward situations with the people around her. This goes especially for Hisao, although Lilly is also well aware of the difficulty in interacting with Rin. Oftentimes, it seems that Rin is unaware that she does not even have arms, and tends to act nonchalant with other students and their disabilities in general, having been the first person to blatantly ask what Hisao's problem is during their introduction. She is Emi's friend and roommate. It is also implied that she knows Kenji to some degree, having shown interest in him and his passion for art despite being partially blind. Her role in the school festival is being the sole painter of a giant mural posted in front of the dorms. Shizune HakamichiShizune is one of Hisao's classmates, as well as the student council president who supervises every aspect of Yamaku's school festival. She has short dark blue hair and eyes, and wears glasses. She is deaf and mute, communicating primarily through sign language. Her friend, Misha, is almost always at her side, translating everything Shizune signs and signing back to her, allowing for communication with other people. She is strong-willed and forceful and is capable of creating craftily manipulated plans, as noted by Hisao, as well as having an extremely competitive nature, even wanting to be first to complete class assignments. This can be attributed to her favorite game, Risk. Occasionally, she displays a softer side, but generally shows a face full of emotion to make up for her lack of speech. She has an intense intolerence of Lilly, and indirectly dislikes Hanako as a result. Shiina "Misha" MikadoMisha is Shizune's best friend and only fellow member in the student council. She serves as her interpreter, and is the first friend Hisao makes, being in the same class as him. She has long curls of pink hair and gold eyes. She is friendly and cheerful for the most part, though she is overly enthusiastic about everything she does, which tires everyone around her. Despite being a relatively major character in Act 1, she has no route with Hisao but helps Hisao get used to the school in his first few days of his transfer, as well as helping Shizune convince Hisao to join the student council. It is not clear what disability or condition she suffers from to warrant enrollment at Yamaku.

Okay, Erisi had already mentioned what makes the characters good: "All these girls have real personalities, so you're not falling in love with the disability, you're falling in love with the girl. After the first go through you never even think about their problems physically, you just think how cool they are as people."
In the end, what made Katawa Shoujo very good was the cast of characters that populate the game. The entire game is set to Hisao's point of view, and I give the Four Leaf Studios a thumbs up for making him likeable as a character, and making his actions in the game natural. Thumbs up again for the other characters, for the same reason as Hisao. I don't really have anything else to say at this point, so I'll end this by praising the game's dialogue/script/thing.
Ah, finally, I finished it. I won't be eating a hat... though, I have to say that my review of the game is very sloppy. Hopefully, when the full version of the game is available I'll be able to do a better-looking and more organized review.
Still, by next week there will be a new review. Not sure if it'll be an anime or another visual novel, but I'll definitely post something, or Wrestlecrap will have the first hat-eating event.

It's actually kinda nice seeing something like this that doesn't degrade into an orgy of such sexual deviance that even I end up horrified and yet strangely aroused, DAMN YOU /D/ FOR RUINING ME, and the fact that the main character is actually... ya know, tolerable, and that they're focusing on the personality of the girls rather than their disabilities honestly makes me smile. I do agree with BBM on the subject of finishing it all in one go and then posting it up for everyone to read, rather than doing chunks at a time. But since different people do things in different ways, I suppose I can't fault you... which really sucks, because I have to fault you for something! Um... um... your hat is stupid! Which is why you have to eat it. Live and only on pay-per-view. For $70. And I get half of the proceedings. Please?

Besides, the team that made the game originated from 4chan, but the site was not involved with the making of the actual game. I think. Just as a note on that: The actual 4Chon involvement in this is negligible to the point of non-existence. There was one thread where someone posted a character sheet with a few plot points, people then posted how that would make a good real game, other people took that and rolled with it, that's basically it. People can rest easy and just enjoy the game.

I managed to finish the game (bad ending, though) in an hour, but finding all the scenes in order to get 100% made it longer. And I'm still stuck at 98%

Shizune is my muse Hopefully if you play your cards right you can have her and Misha. ...Shizune looks kinda bigger than usual there. Anyway, I like Rin, as shown by my sig. Funny thing, though... the last ending I got was Rin's, because I got slightly confused on which choice to make. For the record, the order of the endings that I saw were Kenji (bad), Emi, Lilly, Hanako, Shizune, and then Rin.
