Gillberg won the Lightheavyweight Title from Christian in late 1998 (with the help of the JOB Squad)...then he defended the title a few times, then DISAPPEARED completely (incl. the title), suddenly he pops up again in February 2000 and drops the title to the newly-debuting (as in "debuting his new character") Essa Rios
what the hell was this about? how did the WWE explain that he didn't appear/defend the title for most of 1999 ??

I don't think they did explain it.
From what I remember, they released Gillberg sometime in the summer of 1999. He just vanished.
Then when Essa Rios came in I guess they decided they needed it back.

He was a joke character, with the Light Heavyweight title just being used as a prop for that joke. But then when they wanted to get Essa Rios over using that title. So they just brought him back in to drop it to Rios. If you want a kayfabe explanation, maybe Gillberg was busy defending the title around the world  |
