#1's a no-brainer, but #3 should have been #2.
I expected the Dreamcast to make the list but not ranked that highly.

Where's the portable consoles? most people consider portables in a different category than home consoles. normally i dont agree with IGN lists at all but it finally looks like they got one right. 1 and 2 were perfect choices IMO both for entertainment and what they ment for the video game industry as a whole

This was pretty bad. 360 and PS3 should have been neck and neck. Gamecube should have been ahead of Wii, and Xbox should have been lower.

All in all, pretty fair. My only complaint is that the Playstation should have been ahead of the Xbox 360. All 360 does is advance what was already the point of the first xbox. The Playstation changed the way consoles were made, and marketed.

I'd have put SNES in front of PS2. Besides that, good list.

I would put the PS2 above the Atari 2600. The NES deserves the top spot though, no question there. I'd probably put the Xbox 360 and PS3 higher on the list.

The Wii in the top 10 and over the Xbox?! F***ING BULLS***! [/Iron Sheik]
Other than that, fairly good list.

I think the N64 should have been ranked higher than the X-Box 360. No offense, Microsoft....but the games have more replay value.
Probably one of the biggest problems for the PS3 right now is it is too expensive and the PS2 is still getting games (which in turn increases its library).

If Atari had stayed on top of their own business and been able to either prevent the Great Crash or at least tempered it, then the Colecovision would have been higher than #12. It's attachments would have made it #1 over time, easily. Atari games played better on the Colecovision than the system that the cartridges were designed for. I bet that the Intellivision attachment at least matched the Intellivision's capacity to play Intellivision games. They were developing PC attachments as well (which eventually formed the basis of the Amiga, but it was too little, too late).

PS2 should be #1.
Best selling console of all time for a reason.

You can't make a 'Best 25 Consoles of All Time' unless you've used all the consoles of all time. Since all time includes the future, this list is useless.

Portables? Well, the problem is, you have Game Boy Advance SP, and you have everything else.

SPOILERS!!!
Parts of this list downright out and out baffles me.
The 360's position I could not possibly agree with less. Why? More on that later. [/cornette]
The Dreamcast over the N64...as a gamer, yes. But when you factor in history and legacy that's not the right call. And don't say they aren't doing that, or else #2 and #1 would not be the 2600 and the NES. Hell, just read the first sentence of the 2600, typical "it's ranked here because it started it all". Just like how "Super Mario Bros. is the best game ever" even though any gamer could pick about 50 games at least they'd rather play at any given moment.
Which leads me back to the 360. It's ranked #6, over the PS3 by a considerable margin, which is proof of considering it's legacy as the systems are really not different enough to deserve that big of a gap, especially with them both being current-gen. But then it's also ranked over the Playstation 1. Comparing which of those means more to gaming is no contest at all, it's the PS1 by a long shot. MAJOR foul.
I would have swapped the PS2 and SNES as well, but that's a more minor flaw.
Other than the fact the 360 should probably not even be in the top 10, let alone at #6...not bad.

Other than the fact the 360 should probably not even be in the top 10, let alone at #6...not bad. I think the 360 will be known in the future for practically inventing the blockbuster game as we know it today, and for its online. Beyond that there's nothing much technically impressive, and other than coming in number two this generation... And I totally agree on the bizarreness of the Dreamcast's position. It died in two years. It was the proto-xbox and nearly killed SEGA. Other than having the first true online network for a console...?
