Intercontinental Championship: Rey Mysterio(c) vs. Dolph Ziggler - Summerslam

LOS ANGELES – Despite a valiant effort, Dolph Ziggler once again fell short of dethroning Intercontinental Champion Rey Mysterio.

But, could the loss actually be considered a good thing for the young Superstar?

Much like in chess – where a player improves his game by matching wits with superior opponents – a WWE ring warrior gets better by tangling with top Superstars.

As Mysterio has shown, he is clearly the superior talent, delivering losses to his young opponent at Night of Champions and again on this night in his home state of California.

But, things were a bit tougher for Mysterio this time around. Ziggler pushed the veteran to the limit, showing significant signs of improvement since their last title encounter. In fact, Ziggler was once even able to avoid getting hit by the champion’s signature maneuver – the 619 – something even the most wily veterans find tough to do.

So, who will make the next move? If Mysterio isn’t careful, could he get schooled by the student. Or, is Ziggler’s game still a work in progress, requiring more lessons?

John Cena vs. Triple H - Raw 10/19/09

Triple H def. John Cena

In what may prove to be his final match on Raw, John Cena went face-to-face with one of the show’s toughest competitors, Triple H. The two powerhouses clashed like a sledgehammer against a cement wall. In the end, though, only one man could prevail. And when the bell finally rang, it was The King of Kings who drove through wall. As Cena rose after his defeat, the WWE Universe offered him a salute befitting a warrior the likes of which may never been seen in Raw’s orbit again.

Intercontinental Championship: Rey Mysterio(c) vs. Chris Jericho - Judgment Day 2009

CHICAGO – At the sacred arena where Rey Mysterio once won the World Championship at WrestleMania 22, The Master of the 619 reigned supreme over the nefarious Chris Jericho, retaining his coveted Intercontinental Championship in a Chi-town showdown that left the capacity crowd at Judgment Day in absolute awe.

Going into this incredible match, Mysterio had never lost at Judgment Day. And from the opening bell, his sheer determination made it clear that he wasn’t about to start now. Mysterio thrilled the WWE Universe from the start, matching Jericho’s brutal offense with one high-flying maneuver after another. Jericho struck back with a vengeance, relentlessly picking away at his opponent with absolute contempt. But after successfully blocking numerous attempts at the 619, Jericho’s anger blinded him. Mysterio used the first-ever Undisputed Champion’s momentum against him, causing his head to crash into the ring post. And then, the 619 finally hit its mark, delivering ultimate victory to the energized champion.

The wheels for this explosive test-of-wills were set in motion at the 2009 WWE Draft. In one revolutionary night of fate, Mysterio returned to SmackDown where he had created so many amazing moments for the WWE Universe over the years, and definitely had something personal to defend. It also brought Jericho, who did not have Mysterio’s history with Friday nights, but immediately looked to establish himself as “The new face of SmackDown.”

When Jericho began his campaign to rock and ridicule Friday night in the weeks to come, Mysterio was destined to stand up and meet that forceful contempt with the championship class. During a Fatal Four Way Match to determine the No. 1 contender to face World Heavyweight Champion Edge at Judgment Day, Jericho tempted fate by throwing a chair at Mysterio, getting himself disqualified in the process. The following week, after shoving Jericho down for all the WWE Universe to see, Mysterio’s distraction helped keep Jericho from being added to the Judgment Day World Championship main event. Then, in the final week leading to their fateful pay-per-view meeting, after Jericho faced Edge, Mysterio emerged to deliver a West Coast beat down that hurt his Judgment Day adversary’s pride as much as his head.

The final Judgment Day verdict on Rey Mysterio is that of a heroic champion, who took on the first-ever Undisputed WWE Champion with the mask of a warrior and the ferocious heart of a lion. Although Chris Jericho failed to break his own record and win his ninth Intercontinental title, Judgment Day rules that he remains one of the elite Superstars on SmackDown. But despite Jericho’s skill and his ability to talk a marathon, in the end, The Master of the 619 still had what it took to cross the finish line with the gold.

John Cena vs. Shawn Michaels - Raw 1/12/09

Shawn Michaels def. World Heavyweight Champion John Cena with JBL's distraction

In the night’s main event, Shawn Michaels competed in a non-title match against World Heavyweight Champion John Cena, as JBL looked on from HBK’s corner. The Longhorn Loudmouth currently holds Michaels in his employ and hoped to watch as The Showstopper softened up The Champ prior to his title defense against JBL at the Royal Rumble. Though HBK was eager to show the WWE Universe that he was still the same Superstar, he wasn’t given an opportunity to win the fight cleanly, as JBL both pushed the rope toward Michaels to break up a pin, and caused a distraction for The Champ, allowing his employee to pick up the win with some Sweet Chin Music in a contest that the self-proclaimed “wrestling god” declared HBK’s “WrestleMania.”

WWE Championship Last Man Standing Match: Randy Orton(c) vs. Triple H - Raw 6/22/09

GREEN BAY, Wisc. - After his Last Man Standing Match against Triple H ended in a draw, WWE Champion Randy Orton may have breathed a sigh of relief. That is, until Mr. McMahon knocked the wind out of him. Having bought back Raw from Donald Trump just moments earlier, The Chairman informed The Viper that he must face The Game this Sunday at The Bash in a Three Stages of Hell Match,which includes a regular match, a Falls Count Anywhere Match and, if necessary, a Stretcher Match. As Orton wheeled his luggage to the arena parking garage after the show, Triple H attacked him, pummeling him to the ground, slamming the trunk of a car against his back and offering him a not-so-subtle warning. "This isn't over," The Game growled at his longtime foe. "You're going to Hell."

WWE Championship I Quit Match: Randy Orton(c) vs. John Cena - Breaking Point

MONTREAL – At the first-ever WWE Breaking Point, Randy Orton had to defend his WWE Title against John Cena in a contest that left The Viper no room to execute any of his typical underhanded tactics: An “I Quit” Match. Despite Orton’s earlier promises to defeat Cena, their match ended with Orton, handcuffed to his opponent and locked into a punishing STF, croaking out the words “I quit” to crown Cena a six-time World Champion.

Cena and Orton are both well-known for having fierce, competitive matches, especially when there’s a world title on the line, but their contest at WWE Breaking Point was intense even by those standards. As decreed by Mr. McMahon, the two met in an “I Quit” Match, where the only way to win is to make your opponent say those two dreaded words, anathema to any WWE Superstar. With no pinfalls, count-outs or disqualifications to concern themselves with, the two ring warriors focused on dealing damage to their opponent in the hopes that it’d be enough to cause them to simply give up.

Despite having weakened Cena less than a week earlier with a devastating RKO onto a steel chair, during this match The Viper lacked a distinct advantage to which he had grown accustomed. In addition to setting the contest’s brutal stipulation, Mr. McMahon also forbade any outside involvement on Orton’s behalf, promising to strip The Legend Killer of his title if any of his Legacy were to interfere in the match. Though Orton dominated much of the match, handcuffing Cena and rendering him susceptible to the worst punishment The Viper could dish out, his opponent was able to turn things around.

After enduring attacks with a steel chair, a Singapore Cane and more, Cena gained the upper hand by handcuffing himself to Orton. With nowhere for The Viper to run, it was only a matter of time before Cena locked in a modified STF, making good use of the handcuffs. Unable to withstand the excruciating pain he was suffering, Orton barked out the words, “I quit,” ensuring Cena’s victory.

By defeating Randy Orton only six days after enduring a steel-chair-assisted RKO, John Cena became WWE Champion, adding “Six-Time World Title-Holder” to his already impressive list of accomplishments. Following WWE Breaking Point, it’s clear that once again “The Champ is Here,” but how long will it be before The Viper, Randy Orton, comes slithering back?

Cody Rhodes & Ted Dibiase vs. Shawn Michaels & Triple H - Summerslam

LOS ANGELES – After being repeatedly ambushed, double-teamed and otherwise abused by Legacy, Triple H reached out to his long-time friend and co-founder of D-Generation X, Shawn Michaels, for some help putting these Young Turks in their place. Though Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase gave the experienced ring veterans more trouble than they expected, it was DX who walked away with the victory after Michaels pinned Rhodes.

After an explosive entrance from D-Generation X that saw Triple H & Michaels ride out on a vintage tank, Legacy entered the ring at SummerSlam, ready to benefit from the tutelage of Randy Orton. Putting every one of their mentor’s devious tricks to use, Rhodes & DiBiase made frequent tags, hoping to keep their opponents on the defense. But, despite Legacy’s aggression and willingness to utilize every underhanded tactic at their disposal, the less-experienced team was ultimately defeated when Michaels managed to “break it down” by delivering some devastating Sweet Chin Music to Rhodes.

For months, Triple H had struggled with Randy Orton over possession of the WWE Title, but whenever The Game looked to have it in the bag, The Viper’s associates in Legacy would emerge and assault The King of Kings. Fed up with their interference and unscrupulous tactics, Triple H went in search of his D-Generation X partner, Shawn Michaels. However, as HBK returned for the much-lauded DX reunion, The Game & The Showstopper suffered a surprise attack by Rhodes & DiBiase, who beat their rivals to the mat in the midst of their return celebration, sending a clear message mere days before they were to meet at SummerSlam.

Even in defeat, Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase have reason to celebrate as they accomplished a feat few tandems can boast of: Going toe-to-toe with D-Generation X, one of the premier tag teams in WWE history. Though DX left SummerSlam victorious, Triple H & Shawn Michaels know that they now share Monday Night Raw with another force to be reckoned with: The Legacy. How long will it be before these two dominant factions collide once again?

World Heavyweight Championship Steel Cage Match: CM Punk(c) vs. Jeff Hardy - Smackdown 8/28/09

World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk def. Jeff Hardy (Steel Cage Match for the World Heavyweight Championship)

Following his SummerSlam triumph, a gloating CM Punk returned to SmackDown as the "only Straightedge Champion in WWE History." When The Charismatic Enigma interrupted his celebration, promising to end Punk’s reign in their steel cage rematch, Punk proposed the loser be thrown out of WWE. As the shocked WWE Universe stood witness, Hardy accepted the huge gamble. SmackDown General Manager Theodore Long arrived to set the stipulation in stone. He then dropped a bombshell, stating that at the brand new pay-per-view WWE Breaking Point, where every main event will be a submission match, the winner of the steel cage clash would face Undertaker for the World Heavyweight Championship.

Later that night, after years of incredible feats of reckless abandon, fate finally caught up with Jeff Hardy in a moment of tragic irony. After blocking the high-flying specialist’s climb to victory, the World Heavyweight Champion superplexed him from high atop of the cage. Hardy battled back heroically, trying to prevent his adversary from getting over the cage with every fiber of his being. But a thumb to the eye by Punk sealed his fate, allowing The Straightedge Superstar to retain his title while simultaneously vanquishing the amazing Jeff Hardy from the WWE ring. After Hardy delivered a heartfelt goodbye to the WWE Universe (Video), the ruthless Punk added insult to injury, attacking the departing Superstar from behind with the World title.

As a result of the SmackDown main event, World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk will face the returning Undertaker at WWE Breaking Point.

Money In The Bank Ladder Match: Christian vs. CM Punk vs. Finlay vs. Kane vs. Kofi Kingston vs. Mark Henry vs. MVP vs. Shelton Benjamin - Wrestlemania

HOUSTON - Mr. Money in the Bank CM Punk regained that status from last year, making history as the first person ever to win multiple Money in the Bank Ladder Matches.

The repeat golden opportunist overcame seven worthy opponents, the laws of probability and the laws of physics. In the week leading up to the 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania, The Straightedge Superstar admitted, “You really can’t ignore what a dangerous match this is.”

The briefcase dangled from a 265-foot ceiling and was only obtainable by stunning the seven other competitors long enough to climb one of multiple ladders towering 20 feet over the canvas to detach the coveted prize. It is a feat that is hard enough to accomplish once, but CM Punk has managed to fulfill mission impossible and win the contest twice in as many years.

The victor faced stiff competition, especially from Christian. Captain Charisma, who returned to WWE just more than a month prior, had made it his mission to win this bout, a stipulation he helped to create by participating in the first-ever Money in the Bank Ladder Match. He exuded the type of fearlessness it would have taken to make a run at his first World Title. He even miraculously survived a fall off the ladder while he was on top by catching himself on the ropes and pushing himself back upright, but in the end CM Punk proved he wanted it the most.

Another member of the first Money in the Bank contest was present, as Shelton Benjamin looked for his first win for the stipulation after participating in all but one of the contests that have existed. The former United States Champion is always known for making memorable moments in this type of match, and this year’s competition was no exception. He made the ladders his personal jungle gym, swinging off of them and pulling off impressive aerial moves. He even had Punk by his feet as The Straightedge Superstar dangled from a rung. Unfortunately for his seven opponents, Punk was in the same situation last year and like then, he overcame this time.

In addition to facing Christian and Benjamin, CM Punk had to withstand a current champion in United States Champion Montel Vontavious Porter, the high-flying Kofi Kingston, the experienced Finlay with help from his son Hornswoggle, and two massive, intimidating giants in Kane and Mark Henry. The Big Red Machine was a step away from securing the briefcase until Punk regained his balance after hanging by his legs and kicked Kane to the canvas. At that point, it was all CM Punk and no one was close enough to do anything about it.

Now, two questions remain. When will CM Punk cash in his title opportunity, and will he spend wisely and continue the streak of each Money in the Bank Ladder Match winner successfully earning championship gold within a year? Time will tell.

World Heavyweight Championship: Jeff Hardy(c) vs. John Morrison - Smackdown 7/31/09

World Heavyweight Champion Jeff Hardy def. John Morrison

Just days after defeating CM Punk to win the World Title, Jeff Hardy put his gold on the line against fiery young Superstar John Morrison. In his first-ever World Heavyweight Championship match, Morrison put Hardy to the test in an epic back-and-forth battle for gold. But the high-flyer prevailed, crushing The Friday Night Delight with a Twist of Fate followed up with a Swanton Bomb.

As Hardy basked in the glow of his first successful title defense, CM Punk came to the ring to apparently congratulate Hardy by raising his arm in victory. But then, in an ugly display of poor sportsmanship, The Straightedge Superstar viciously assaulted Hardy amidst a chorus of boos from the WWE Universe. The crazed ex-champion reigned down blow upon blow on Hardy, leaving him battered and beaten on the arena floor. Then, just when it appeared Punk was done, he attacked Hardy again, tossing his helpless body across the announce table and onto the arena floor.

Submissions Count Anywhere Match: Cody Rhodes & Ted Dibiase vs. Shawn Michaels & Triple H - Breaking Point

MONTREAL — In an absolutely shocking upset, Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase locked Shawn Michaels in a torturous double-team submission maneuver and forced HBK to tap out in a punishing Submissions Count Anywhere Match that both sides will be feeling the effects of for weeks to come. (PHOTOS)

The WWE Universe knew tonight’s unique contest would be a war of attrition before the bell even rang. With no count-outs, pinfalls or disqualifications, D-Generation X and The Legacy were free to brawl all over Montreal’s Bell Centre and that’s exactly what they did. While DX was able to batter Rhodes & DiBiase throughout the arena, The Legacy showed off a mean streak that would make Randy Orton proud once the action spilled to the entrance ramp.

Utilizing every weapon they could get their hands on, The Legacy managed to bring DX down. The duo then double-teamed Michaels with Rhodes applying a figure-four leg lock around the ring post while DiBiase slapped on a Million Dollar Dream, putting the WWE legend in an absolutely torturous position. With HBK's spine bent at an impossible angle and The Game incapacitated, Michaels did the only thing he could to survive — he submitted.

Tonight’s victory is, without a doubt, the biggest of The Legacy’s young career. By defeating one of the greatest tag teams in WWE history, Rhodes & DiBiase have finally cemented what they have been saying all along — they are the future of WWE.

Of course, D-Generation X should never be counted out. While HBK & Triple H will be icing their bruises tonight, they’ll also be plotting their retribution.

With each duo now holding one victory over the other, the WWE Universe can expect sparks to fly when The Legacy and DX cross paths again on Monday’s Raw.

ECW Championship: Jack Swagger(c) vs. Christian - ECW on SyFy 2/24/09

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Music City was playing the tune of “The All-American American” on Tuesday night as Jack Swagger remained ECW Champion after defeating Christian on ECW on Sci Fi.

Captain Charisma made a victorious return to the Land of the Extreme, defeating Swagger twice in singles action and again in a tag team match. But when it came time to defend his ECW Title, “The All-American American” picked up an important victory against Christian when it counted most.

Through a hard-fought battle against the experienced Christian, the arrogant, young Superstar proved again why he’s the new face of the Extreme franchise. Christian’s injured left shoulder and arm were his downfall as Swagger hit him with the gutwrench powerbomb and pinned him for the win. It was Swagger’s third title defense, and again he came up victorious.

Will Christian challenge “The All-American American” again for the ECW Title? Will any Extreme Superstar be able to stop the Swagger of the ECW Champion?

WWE Championship: John Cena(c) vs. Shawn Michaels vs. Triple H - Survivor Series

WASHINGTON D.C. - When it comes to claiming WWE’s most coveted title, loyalty remains an expense some Superstars simply cannot afford.

While Triple H and Shawn Michaels insisted that competing in a Triple Threat Match for the WWE Championship would do little to sever the deep bond between them, the allure of gold proved too much for the DX cohorts, who quickly turned on one another. As their alliance frayed, WWE Champion John Cena eagerly leveraged his opponents’ betrayal into an intensely fought victory.

Things started out amicably enough. The Game and HBK even greeted the crowd together as DX’s entrance music pervaded the arena. Seconds after the opening bell, however, Michaels unexpectedly lulled his associate to sleep with Sweet Chin Music. With Triple H out cold, HBK and The Champ exchanged strikes.

As any member of the WWE Universe can tell you, though, never count out Triple H. The King of Kings rallied and the three-man clash took on a different, and dangerous, dynamic as the action moved outside the ring. It was there that The Game smashed HBK through the announcers’ table with a spine buster, leaving Triple H to contend with the WWE Champion. While the match nearly ended with several two-counts, in the end a fatigued Cena refused to quit against his equally exhausted rivals and managed to pin Triple H to retain his title.

While it remains to be seen whether or not DX will survive this latest chapter, WWE Champion John Cena appeared more than happy to close the book on Survivor Series 2009 with his title intact.

Hell In a Cell Match: Cody Rhodes & Ted Dibiase vs. Shawn Michaels & Triple H - Hell In A Cell

NEWARK, N.J. – The numbers appeared overwhelming for Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase even before the two set foot inside Satan’s Structure. Their opponents, Triple H & Shawn Michaels, have earned a combined 17 World Championships between them. Meanwhile, The Game has prevailed in five of seven Hell in a Cell Matches while HBK emerged victorious in the first ever match inside the Devil’s Playground.

Despite an impressive effort, The Legacy simply could not overcome those daunting figures and the determination of DX. While Rhodes & DiBaise came up short, there should be no shame in dropping a match to, arguably, the most imposing tag team in WWE history, especially after defeating DX in the months leading up to Hell in a Cell.

Perhaps realizing how formidable the task was that lay before them, Legacy attempted to secure the upper hand even before the opening bell, attacking DX as they made their way to the ring. Once the dust had settled, Legacy had dragged Michaels into the cell alone, locking The Game outside. After watching helplessly as his partner was being punished, Triple H had seen enough. He retrieved a pair of bolt cutters, broke into the cell and devastated Rhodes & DiBiase. The earlier attack seemed only to enrage Triple H & Michaels, who sought – and found – revenge once inside the 20-ft. tall, steel structure when they locked out DiBiase in order to punish Rhodes.

While DX capitalized on their experience and taught The Legacy a lesson they’ll likely never forget, there’s little doubt that with their effort, Rhodes & DiBiase earned a great deal of grudging respect from many in the WWE Universe.
