from perezhilton.com After a serious spine injury, British superstar Phil Collins has made the decision to never drum again as it is too painful. He says: "I've got a condition that means I can't play anymore. After playing drums for 50 years, I've had to stop. Obviously I'm very sad about it. My vertebrae has been crushing my spinal cord because of the position I drum in. It comes from years of playing. I can't even hold the sticks properly without it being painful." Sad! But good job putting your health first. We're sure this wasn't an easy decision to make. The former Genesis member also reassures the world that although he can no longer drum, he can still sing. Way to look on the bright side! i was raised on genesis and find this heart breaking. he was amazing

I thought he retired years ago. Does he do the occasional freelance gig or something?

Sad to hear as he's a really good drummer. But hey, his main skill is singing, and as the OP said, health is the most important thing.

I hope that aspiring drummers learn something from this.
Learn. Proper. Technique.
Proper posture is key in everything, including drumming.

He never got his receipt back from Jim "The Hellwig" Warrior.Phil's a proud man and I'm sure he'll be back on the circuit someday, if for no other reason than to finally pin Warrior's shoulders to the mat for the 1-2-3.

I thought he retired years ago. Does he do the occasional freelance gig or something? Not to mention that he was playing with his son, Simon, on some of Simon's songs/albums as well.

That's a good first step. Now he just needs to stop singing.

VERY sorry to hear this. I just wonder that even though he has quit drumming, will this still bother him in his everyday life as the years go by.
He said he was through touring last year. Of course he said that once before too.
Thank you Phil for all you've given

I've always been amazed how guys like Phil Collins and Don Henley could play the drums while singing. Sad to hear, but at least he's still got the vocal chords.
