Man, there's SOMETHING about volcanoes. First, they found the Coelacanth around a volcanic island, now this!

Great, and now some science a holes will take specimens for study and lose them, causing them to multiply in a new area ... Kind of like those giant African frogs that got loose in the Southern Unites States or the Africanized Killer Bees that escaped that lab in South America ...

We already have giant rats in the US. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gambian_pouched_rat

Yeah, some show, probably Monsterquest, had a special on the spread of large rats in the United States, and the primary suspects were the Nutria and the Gambian Pouched Rat.
First of all, if Frogs had the sufficent mental capacity to fear the gods, they would consider Death to be an African Clawed Frog. Technically, ACF were used as pregnancy tests and were thrown out after people ceased to use such tests. These types of rats are not evolved for human habitation, not in the same way the vermin rats are. Granted, they could adapt in a few generations, but they sound like specialists.

Papaua New Guinea is like a land time forgot. They have giant rats and cannibalism. That's how Nelson Rockefeller's son got eaten.

The fact that this species of rat isn't even the largest known to exist regulates this news to newzzZzzZzz....
I'd love to see scientists breed an elephant-sized rat but there seems to be a set limit on just how large any given family can develop.

I'd love to see scientists breed an elephant-sized rat but there seems to be a set limit on just how large any given family can develop. This little guy is known as the Hydrax, or Rock Badger, as it's called in English Bibles. This little beast, although it resembles an cavy, is the closest living relative of the elephant, aside from the Manatees. Well, it's certainly what the elephant's ancestors looked like at one point.
