Ouch... what all did you need, btw? A whole new system?
Unless you're going top of the line gaming... that's pretty steep. I used to build my own or upgrade, but after pricing them last time I just got a Dell 4400 w/ 2gb memory, Vista Premium, a 500 gb HD and a 22" LCD for around $900.

For me, it's either NewEgg, ZipZoomFly, or the local MicroCenter in Rockville.

Newegg is always the way to go! I spend so much money with them guys it isn't funny. I recently built a: AMD 2.5 ghz quad core 8gb ram Have over 4tb hard drive space but use half of that to fully mirror my media collection etc. Little outdated now, but got a Nvidia 9800 based video card. Don't even play games on my pc. Kinda sad huh? Using Windows Vista Ultimate x64 at the moment. Couldn't be any happier with it. Do yourself a favor and get your new video games from them too. All the new games are several dollars cheaper than retail and are also tax free and include free shipping. Good times. and they've come in.... now to figure out how to put this all together... I may need duct tape.

new egg and I did buy a whole new computer... minus the dvd drive.
I salvaged the dvd drive from my old computer that broke down (see: a thread a couple of months ago that probably got deleted) and a card reader too.
I also had to salvage the power suplly from my old computer since the power supply that came with my case didn't have a freaking SATA connector! so now I have no idea if this computer is going to work with 400 watts/

You can get molex to sata power adapters that work well. I've used them before and might have a couple somewhere. Have a pretty new IDE dvd burner too I haven't used. How many watts is your other power supply? The higher the watts isn't always better but 400 is pretty low by today's standards. I would use the other power supply if it's more powerful and get a molex to sata adapter. Definitely worth it. www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812123119&cm_re=molex_to_sata-_-12-123-119-_-ProductThey have a few different ones. new egg and I did buy a whole new computer... minus the dvd drive. Yeah, sounds like you are better off with a new one. I got a 585w and it also powers my video card, 3 hard drives, optical drive and a pretty kickin' system. Newegg always has some pretty good deals on power supplies. There are always plenty of good deals but something under $50 will do you good. I can't believe it but I checked and they still have the one I have in my current build for $35 plus shipping. I couldn't recommend a better one for the money. www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817339022That bad boy powers a pretty good quad core system. I don't have a quad core, I have a Pentium E5300 which I believe is dual core (it's also 70 bucks, pretty good deal). I do have a case fan though, and that may be an issue.
