You don't find it uncomfortable and/or annoying when a company aggressively attempts to pander to a single audience?

It sounds like an ad campaign/promotion to try to appeal to the black community, which doesn't raise the flags for me. They've been attempting this ever since the bulls*** "I'm lovin it" campaign began some six years ago. I despise McDonald's for that. The "I'm lovin' it" campaign was targeted toward black people? The one that had Justin Timberlake? Was he supposed to be on the pulse of the black community or something?

Seeing as how the 'i'm lovin it' campaign is still actively used, I'm pretty sure the ad campaign has gone far further than Justin Timberlake.

My point was that I've never really noticed it targeting that demographic. I may be wrong, but it didn't seem like it was targeting any race, just young people which they've always done.

It might have been a good idea to wait until you could see the website before making the thread. Honestly not trying to be rude, just that entire story was wrong. To be fair, it's not like I claimed it all as fact. I was pretty careful to include the words "apparently" and "supposedly" when needed. Also, the entire story wasn't wrong...just the detail of them only hiring African Americans at that one chain. And since the topic has already reached 2 pages, it at least sparked discussion. Nobody else made a thread about it either. So, I really don't see how making this thread caused any problems. I got my question answered, and it's still a relevant story. What's the big deal?

If it was 365white.com, McDonald's would be called Racist. If it's real and it's 365Black.com, then it's racist too. I won't be patronizing McDonald's ever again.

Now that I know that it's not a situation where they're just hiring black employees, I don't think that it's racist. There's nothing wrong with helping minorities with scholarships and such. However, I really feel that things like "black history month" don't do anything to lower racial boundaries. In the year 2009 there really is no point in making a big deal out of the great things that black people have done. It's almost like saying "hey, these black guys aren't so bad...a black man invented peanut butter."

From the What IS page from the site: WHAT IS 365BLACK? At McDonald's®, we believe that African-American culture and achievement should be celebrated 365 days a year — not just during Black History Month. That's the idea behind 365Black.com. It's a place where you can learn more about education, employment, career advancement and entrepreneurship opportunities, and meet real people whose lives have been touched by McDonald's. Plus, you can also have a chance to win exciting once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. So make sure you visit often — you just might get inspired. ----------- Don't see anything wrong with that Why must we keep segregating that demographic by calling them African Americans? Why can't they just be FULL Americans like everyone else of non-black skin colors? In fact, why can McDonalds not just celebrate achievments of mankind in general? Yeah, I think that is the nicest thing I can say about this.

Yep, and it annoyed me regardless of the demographic it aimed at, it just sounds dumb. Kinda like WWE Universe, but that's a whole 'nother horse... one that has deserved the beating it has gotten since it first showed up.

I've never liked the idea of black-only scholarships, especially because the academic requirements are usually much lower than the general scholarships, in my experience. If McDonald's wants to actively pursue young black people for employment, it's their business. Just don't make the scholarships black-only. They should be available to anyone who wants to utilize them, not just minorities.

The point of the scholarships being black only is because generally there is an economic divide between the average black family and the average white family and the scholarships are there to give kids that otherwise wouldn't go to college a chance at an education.

Yea well, where are the scholarships that help white kids with parents who absolutely suck at money and can't even afford to pay $200 for their books? Seriously? I need to know, because I'm in that boat right now.

I found an article talking about this from 2002, so apparently this 365Black thing isn't new, but the whole "hiring black people only" story is a myth.
