I know some people have expressed this before, but How come some guys only get announced by one name? And not just that, some people, when they're addressed, are addressed by the full name all the time (like Matt Hardy how you doing? Shawn Micheals what's up? Ric Flair what are you doing here?).
Let's see who they have with one name: Heidenreich Snitsky Maria (no last name ever mentioned on tv) Carlito Austin (Sometimes) Hurricane (Helms has been dropped) Juventud Eugene NIdia Rikishi Candice (or Candice Michelle, despite her last name being Beckman). Melina (I'm sure they called her Perez on RAw). Batista Funaki (He used to be Sho Funaki) JIllian (no relation to Scott Hall) Tajiri (wasn't he YOshihiro tajiri in ecw?)
Full names: Shawn Micheals Steve Austin (as in, he's never just called Steve when he's not called Austin) Matt Hardy Kurt Angle Christy Hemme Ashley Massaro (everytime, since she's won, she's been called by her full name) Rob Van Dam Shelton Benjamin Ken Kennedy MIchelle McCool

Some guys you have listed WWE still calls them by their full time now and then. Like Dave Batista, Gene Snitsky. But it kinda started with Goldberg. Goldberg sounds like a much tougher name then the full name of Bill Goldberg. That can be said for guys like Snitsky, Batista, and Heidenreich. Thats why they drop the first name sometimes. Its kinda a hoss thing.
Now when they drop the last name thats a different story. I think they dropped Carlito's last name because Cool sounded to gimmicky. Hurricane's was dropped because he turned from a guy thinking he was a superhero, to just a superhero. Juventud's last name was probably dropped because it sounds to much like Guerrero.
As for the rest of that list, I guess thats what WWE just wanted to call them. Plus some last names or first names are hard to remember. Why call a guy Sho Funaki when you can just call him Funaki?

Guess Triple H sounds more intimidating than his short name of "Helmsley". And Hunter Hearst Helmsley sounds snobbish when his character isn't that much of that anymore.

On Tajiri... It is an improvement over what he was called in like 1995 or so in WWF as a jobber. He was "Tajiri Yoshihiro". My guess here is some REALLY smart person behind the scenes thought "Gee how could a first name be longer than a last name? This won't work!"

Actually I heard that his real name is Yoshi Hiro. I could totally be off.

I kind of tought Gene Snitsky wanted his name to almost sound like Gene Kiniski, which it almost does, but that's dumb cuz nobody today knows about Kiniski and filtering out the name-sounding similarity, there's zero comparison.

The people with no last names annoys me to no end. It has become almost the standard in the womens division. I don't mind so much when it's a pretty unique name, but when its a commonly used name it gets annoying...

I'm glad Batista is sticking with just the last name. I mean, how intimidating of a name is "Dave"?
"He's 7 feet tall, he weighs 358 pounds, he's a mountain of death and destruction! His name is...
...Dave."

I think the key to name shortening is for simplicity. It's easier and quicker to say Batista instead of Dave Batista.
As far as Carlito goes, I'm glad they decided to call him just his first name instead of just his last name. Can you imagine a wrestler simply named "Colon"? Russo would have a field day.

You know if they ever resolved that thing between Jericho and Carlito, he would have made the Colon joke just like he did Ben-oit.
