From the wikipedia page about the squash in question: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cucurbita_ficifoliaCommon Names * Asian pumpkin * fig-leaf gourd (also fig-leafed or fig-leaved gourd) * Malabar gourd or squash * pie melon (in Australia and New Zealand) * shark fin melon (in Asia) * Siam pumpkin * Thai marrow * sambo (in Ecuador)but koda take a step back here. if you were working on the game and you looked at all the sources I just posted what item would you put in when someone typed in the word sambo? The squash. Why? Because you can't put the fighting style, and only one of your sources lists it as a black person. Then again the head guy at 5th Cell was NOT behind the word research for the game. He told 3 different guys to do so. Now maybe they came across the racist meaning of it, but hey, they aren't stupid. They know if they used it to summon a black guy, they'd be in instant shit.

I facepalmed when I saw this. I know it wasn't meant to be racist, but I knew that it could easily be interpreted as such.
I just hope this poor, poor lapse in judgment doesn't reflect badly on the rest of our nation.

They spent several months combing every corner of the internet. I'm pretty sure they went through every single Wikipedia page for even obscure words.

It is not any other counties place to put your ways down when it is done in your own country, meant to be seen by only people in your country.

Well like I said, the statement the head of 5th Cell made is still true. HE, himself, did not know it was racist, and how could he when he did not do the research on the words? He was too busy doing...you know, everything else on the game. If anyone could possibly be racist in this matter, it is one of the 3 guys he set aside to spend months on end researching words on the internet. Maybe they aren't racist, but instead decided to use a REALLY obscure meaning of a word. Regardless, hardly anyone in the population knows what sambo originally meant, and if it wasn't for it being blown out of proportion, a lot of people still wouldn't know it.

Exactly, it was broadcast in Australia, for an Australian audience.

Black face is probably on the same level as the Confederate flag. It's only offensive in certain countries and cultures.

The confederate flag has no meaning in Australia. I understand that in America it carries a lot of meaning and is offensive to a lot of people. Sorry for getting so defensive in this topic, I just don't want the world thinking we're all backward racist hillbillies.

The Confederate Flag also brings up a lot of pride in many Southerners. Obviously not for the racist imagery it brings up but because of the men who wielded the flag. Many of them were just men from farms who fought and died to protect their land and their loved ones. The is something I'm sure anyone could be proud of.
But that's the end of the discussion for the Confederate Flag, cause last time it was discussed, things got VERY ugly.

Blackface is offensive and as some Australians have said its only an issue in the US it damn well isn't. There is no way something like that would have aired in the UK either. Blackface is offensive and you just have to look into the history of the minstrel act to see why. Its sheer ignorance.

Blackface is offensive and as some Australians have said its only an issue in the US it damn well isn't. There is no way something like that would have aired in the UK either. Blackface is offensive and you just have to look into the history of the minstrel act to see why. Its sheer ignorance. Little Britain (Though this MAY have been DVD only) and The League of Gentlemen both did minstrel sketchs, the latter one in every single episode. I have seen Gollywogs still on sale in some market stalls. This may be more due to the fact that the Gollywogs (or however their spelt) are often percieved by collectors as not offensive but a childhood toy they had when younger and that both comedy shows basically go out of their way to shock and offend. But yeah, it's been toned down alot but there's still the odd bit of 'blackface' from time to time over here. Also fun fact about The Netherlands and Belgium. Christmas time, their Santa (Or something to do with Christmas celebrations anyway) is called Sinterklaas. His "elves"? Several black faced young men called "Zwaite Piet". Talking to a Belgium friend about it, he was a little confused about how shocked an american friend and I was about it. "I can see why it can be seen as racist but it's just an innocent thing for kids at Christmas time. The black is supposed to be coal or something these days. The Americans actually tried to step in and told us to make them rainbow coloured instead of black. We tried it one year and it scared the crap out of the kids so we just went back to normal again." I guess it's just how their raised and with tradition and all, it's not really something that can just stop with a click of a finger.

As horrible as that was, I did like the look of Harry Connick Jr.'s face. He just doesn't know what to do. I propose this be the new craze here at the Crap. Anytime someone posts something offensive, someone else posts this picture of Harry Connick Jr. Sounds like a good idea. Plus, we need a photo to replace the Benoit confused one.

Simply, the vast majority of Australians don't find it offensive, I haven't heard anything about the actual black people here complaining about it.
And the show was aired exclusively to the Australian audiences, not like it was intended to be viewed by the rest of the world. It was by Australians for Australians.
