I think Amelia is actually a lock for a nod. Movies like that always are.

I'd be really surprised if Nine, Avatar or Inglorious Basterds is nominated for Best Picture.

I think the only sure locks are Up and Precious. If the Oscars nominated good movies more often than not, I'd say A Serious Man and The Hurt Locker would also be locks.

Are the expanding the field to 10 nominees for Best Picture this year or was that just a rumor?

also I'll go along with the invictus hype, because it's morgan freeman as nelson mandela being directed by clint eastwood.

Yes they are expanding to 10 nominees. Therefore the kind of stuff that should be nominated but usually isn't, like Up, possibly could be. Off course movies like that still won't win, but it's a start

Why is the guy picking a film that hasn't even been released yet (Avatar) over a popular release in the same genre (District 9)?

Well, in the animated film's defense the title is 9. Nine is being directed by the same guy who did Chicago and is in a musical vein. Should be a good little film.

Being boring didn't stop The Curious Case of Benjamin Button from getting nominated. Benjamin Button also had a 70% RT rating and went over 100 mil. Amelia has 17% RT and will very lucky to limp to 19 mil. Yeah, I'd say Nine has a better shot, even if the source material is obscure as hell.
