There are many reason I consider the Orton vs. HHH feud to be a colossal failure, but the main issue I have had with it is the fact that it was booked as an epic Attitude Era feud, with none of the logic that defined them.
Take Vince McMahon for example.
He is portrayed as having the final say in anything on all the shows. He can do whatever he wants. He can hire and fire people, including GMs, at will. He can book any matches he wishes, and can order the wrestlers to do anything.
Yet since getting punted in the head and sidelined for months, then watching all members of his family aside from his wife get the same treatment, he has left Randy Orton almost completely alone. This is the same guy who feuded with Steve Austin for almost two years because he did not fit the corporate mold. The same guy who made Bobby Lashleys career a living hell for months just because he had a hand in getting Vinces head shaved.
Orton decimates his family and largely gets a free pass. Why would he not get the same treatment as McMahon enemies of the past, when he did worse to the man than anyone else, even Steve Austin has ever done? Why would he not, at the very least, book Orton in more difficult matches where he would have a hard time keeping the title?
It is even more silly when you consider that Vince is currently more preoccupied with using his considerable power to pick on...Teddy Long. A guy that has never done anything to Vince.
They could explain this in any way they wanted. Say Triple H told Vince to stay away from Orton because he wanted to beat him fair and square to prove a point. Say, unlike those past guys, Orton was smart enough to use his lawyers to negotiate his contract in such a way that Vince couldn't flagrantly abuse his power on Orton.
It just really takes me out of the story when something this questionable is overlooked. I understand that wrestling is not logical or realistic, but it DOES have set rules within its own little internal world, and in WWE one of the biggest, if not the biggest one is that you dont screw with Vince McMahon and expect to get off easily. He went after HBK with more zeal and fervor, and he didnt even have much of a reason other than not liking a few remarks HBK made on an episode of RAW and HBK refusing to become more like his old self.
