...or were extremely surprised to.
At the top of my list (and probably many others) is Shane McMahon on WCW programming and there being one overpowering company in charge of both WCW and WWE. I remember not even being into wrestling at that point, but it just seemed so bizarre. Seeing WCW wrestlers on WWE TV would be like seeing Sega characters appear in Nintendo games... Erm...
Also: -Shawn Michaels coming back in 2002. I figured he was done for. -Goldberg in WWE. I am not sure if it was hyped or not, but what a mind-blowing moment. -Bischoff in WWE. That was so incredibly strange to see.

I was really surprised that Hogan turned heel in '96.
I was also very surprised to hear about WCW being out of business and purchased by WWF!

WCW going down would be up there.
The Benoit ordeal, that goes without saying.
CM Punk being as successful as he has been is totally up there.

Bret Hart appearing on an episode of Raw after leaving the WWF.
Still blows my mind.
Just so all know.. it was the video of how much he disliked Vince.

Eric Bischoff appearing on Raw... regularly.
Bret Hart agreeing to attend the Hall of Fame, and then appearing on Raw a while later.
That The Rock returned to plug that godawful Diva Search. Though his segment was the only entertaining part of the whole endeavour.

Bischoff in WWE, for sure. That was just surreal ... and poorly handled, too. That should have been played up for weeks heading into a PPV, but they did it on free TV with zero buildup.
Here's another: Shawn Michaels becoming WWF champion in the '90s. Five years earlier when he was a Rocker, that idea would have seemed absurd.

What like Jeff Hardy you mean or Bret Hart a few years before Michaels became champion and a shorter time after he was considered the weaker part of The Hart Foundation? Shawn Michaels coming back in 2002. I read in WWF Magazine around 1999 time he was never going to compete again. WCW going out of business That there was a bigger company than WWF with all of WWF ex superstars atone time That Hogan had turned heel in 1996 Paul Bearer turning his back on Undertaker after the Boiler Room Brawl in 1996 was a shock to me Bret Hart showing up for Hal Of Fame and I didn;t know he had showen up on a Raw a short while after the Hall Of Fame The Michaels, Austin Tyson altercation (Wrestlemania 14) being main stream news in UK at the time Eric Bischoff showing up and hugging Vince McMahon Triple Murder suicide The death of Owen in the ring

More like Bret than Hardy because of the era. I never expected Bret would be at the world-title level, either, but Michaels was even more unlikely because he was even smaller and a quote-unquote "high flyer." If the Hogan years impressed anything upon me, it was that smaller guys with acrobatic moves always got steamrolled. It was much easier in 1998 to believe someone like Jeff Hardy might eventually be a world-title guy because HBK had already shattered that ceiling.

Ya but this was ' The New Generation Era' where everything WWF had stood for before (big muscular guys on top and the cruiser weights kept to 'curtain jerker's') was now what WCW stood for. They were moving in a much different direction and going for almost o0ppsiote of what they were before. Wrestling skills mattered more in the 90's and muscles mattered more in the 80's Also during the 80's boom period 'Macho Man' was massive and a massive part of the 80''s boom period. He wasn't all that big certainly not as big as Hogan or the Warrior

Hogan's heel turn in WCW Owen Hart's death during a PPV Hearing about Eddie Guerrero's passing Seeing a picture of chris Benoit with 1967-2007 under it at the end of a Raw Tribute to him. The exploitation of Eddie Guerrero's death. David Arquette becoming WCW Champion for promotion purposes and the movie was mostly panned. Goldberg wrestles for WWE Brock Lesnar leaves the WWE after only two years Sable returns to the WWE four years after her lawsuit Sunny's return on the Raw 15th Anniversary Jim Ross doing commentary on Smackdown Ric Flair eventually retiring The "rebirth" of ECW Vince McMahon getting slapped and kicked in the head minutes after his return Million dollar challenge Edge and Christian returning WCW and ECW are no more Montreal Screwjob Gail Kim leaving TNA Kurt Angle and Mick Foley appearing in TNA Magnum TA's career ending Steve Austin becoming Stone Cold Rocky Maivia becoming the Rock a thin HHH becomes a much beefier "The Game" Shane McMahon's appearance on Nitro

The return of Jesse Ventura...seeing him in the ring as a special ref and then throwing shane out of the ring and saying "that's for your old man, you little...." Or something to that effect was unreal.

I thought I would never see Bischoff in the WWE, much less shaking hands with Vince McMahon. The greatest part was just before the commercial before Bisch appeared to the crowd, Booker T was giving an interview and Bisch walked by, shook Booker's hand... And of course, Booker said "Tell me I did not just see that!" Another one was Joey Styles appearing in the WWE. He was someone that I felt really did not like and did not want a part of the WWE as a whole. Loved him being there but didn't expect it to happen. Oh, and I never knew that Hulk Hogan and Abdullah the Butcher ever fought, until I found a video of the match from New Japan:
