Ok, this is a lil late since I DVR'd Smackdown and haven't really had a chance to watch untill now since I've been working.
Anyway, before I was wondering if they were dropping his jamaican gimmick soon, when he talked without the accent... but when he came out for the tag team match on Smackdown, I noticed they are billing him from "Ghana, West Africa" now. So, he's a Rastafarian Ghanan? Just seems kinda random that he still has his islandy music and all that jazz, but billed from Africa.

The commentators mentioned that he was born in Africa, but spent a lot of time in Jamaica.
Personally I feel its rather stupid. Its not like most wrestlers arent already billed from places they have probably never lived in.

The only thing I can think is that it may have been something Kofi requested, to represent his home country.

The only thing I can think is that it may have been something Kofi requested, to represent his home country. I can understand this. I would be highly pissed off if our one and only hall of fame wrestler Baron Mikel Scicluna had been billed from somewhere else. It's ok if you live in the US, but when it's a one-off like Malta, Ghana, Greece, whatever, you want people to be aware of your country (or your fans want to be acknowledged).

well, he was like Kevin Thorn. Indeed APPEARED!! to be a vampire, but in fact, the announcers INSISTED to us he was very into the "gothic lifestyle". Makes complete sense....
.... no it doesn't... who am I kidding.... *cry*

How about this? Kofi Kingston is a naturalised citizen of Jamaica but has recently experienced an upswing in patriotic love towards his birth place, Ghana, due to its recent election which caused power to be transferred from one legitimately elected leader to another, securing Ghana's status as a stable democracy, hence the change. It's certainly better than "Kofi was announced from Jamaica because he really liked it and still does but is now announced from Ghana anyway." even if it is boring.

Should've started him in Ghana to begin with. But I'm guessing the writers figured Average Fan / Joe Punchclock don't know where the hell Ghana is v.s. Jamaica.
Thanks for dumbing it down, WWE. The fans' heads hurt less that way.

Honestly? I had no problem with them pushing him as from Jamaica and I don't get why anyone would, but at the same time it makes sense to have dropped it now - the smiling Jamaican thing is one of those things that just couldn't break the main event scene I don't think, while I don't think being from Africa will limit him in the same way.

It's simple, and Cole and Lawler made it simple. He was born in Ghana, but grew up in Jamaica and lives the Jamaica lifestyle.

The solution is to announce him from Des Moines.

Since WWE daoesn't know where he's from on a consistant basis...why not announce him from "Parts Unknown"?

I know I would be pissed if I joined the E and was announced from Mexico (nothing against Mexico, but you get the point).

Yes but his gimmick reason isn't that he finally convince the Man to let him be real, maaaan. His gimmick reason is that he lived in Jamaica for ages and so represented them as a native son. Then decided not to. With the explanation given by the announcers focusing on how much he loves Jamaica, not Ghana.

I think it's funny with the African gimmicks they've used on people, they actually sign a guy FROM Africa, and make him Jamaican.
