Do you think Shelton is too far gone at this point to become a major player in WWE? Unfortunately, I think so. He's one of my favorite wrestlers, but I think they missed to boat with him back in 2004. He had so much momentum going then, and then a heel turn and momma manager later, it all went kaput. He's proceeded to do not very much, despite his incredible talent, for the past couple of years, and is now in ECW with no real direction. Is it too late for the best pure athlete in WWE?

Yep. The ol' shark has jumped for Shelton. He'll always be in the position he's in.

I agree with this. It was a shame, because at that time in 2004, when he defeated HHH, I figured he'd be a made man/star in WWE. Now it seems like he's just floundering and not doing much. I still like the guy, I just don't get all the hatred he gets on here.

While it was intended to be just a generic heel promo, everything Sheamus said about him the other week is entirely true.

Yep. I dunno what happened to him exactly, but it felt like somewhere along the ways Shelton just stopped getting better. He could still have a good match every now and then, but there's still something about his matches and promos that just sound out of place.

He can't speak on the mic when cutting a promo. He couldn't improve over time. It's not happening for him, no matter how talented he is in ring.
And yes, I know Jeff Hardy sucked on the mic, but Jeff threw himself from 20 ft tall structures to earn his big belt. All Shelton's done is die his hair blonde. Not the same.

The funny thing is up until a few days before Wrestlemania 25 he was picked to win MITB, but they went with Punk in the end instead, and look where he is now. The clue was that they both dropped their respective titles (IC & US) just before the show. It's a real stretch to see him ever making up to that possible level again now.

He's the type of guy that should always be part of a tag team.

I think he's the type of guy who will surely get a "thank you" run somewhere down the line, probably winning MITB after so many years of trying - but no, I don't think he will ever be "THE guy" or anything close. I don't have a problem with that though, he's actually in a comfortable role where he gets to show his talent often and I don't think he wants anything more.

If he's happy where he is, fantastic for him. I just think it's just a shame that he's poised to join the roster of guys who had exemplary talent and skill but, for whatever reason, never aimed very high. I can remember seeing his run of midcard matches with Carlito on RAW a few years back, and thinking that these two guys were going to be something to watch over the coming years.

The announcers can only put over the guy's athleticism and potential for so long, without a real push it just becomes BS lipservice. They pushed him too early, he's more ready now, they need to give him another shot.

Know who Shelton kinda reminds me of in a way:
Billy Gunn.
They both had the tools to be somewhat big, but neither had the right charisma on their own.

That window of opportunity to make him a major player has long passed. Part of that is because of booking, and part of it is because of his inability to really connect with that fans, aside from that brief time in 2004.

Shelton doesn't have enough charisma to be the face of a company as geared toward glitz as WWE is.
There's a difference between him and Benoit, who might not have been the guy to lure in mainstream audiences, but had plenty of intensity and could be believable as a world champ. Shelton, until recently, has had a history of coming off sort of goofy in promos (and not in the Cena way where he can make up for it).
Could he be a bit higher up? Maybe, but let him be a top guy on ECW.

Shelton improved on the mic in late 2007. What was so bad about his promo with Sheamus or on the ECW VIP Lounge earlier this year? His promo about R-Truth on Smackdown was fine too.People are stuck in 2005. Also Shelton got "Let's go Shelton" chants vs Burchill and he got a nice reaction this past week too. People always talking about he can't connect with the fans when they overpraise guys like Morrison and Ryder.

Shelton's look and gimmick don't exactly have the same sort of stand-out flash that Morrison's or Ryder's has, either.
