So I was watching Heroe's of World Class today and I watched Triumph and Tragedy of World Class Championship Wrestling a few days ago, and I had a thought.
If David Von Erich had lived, do you think he would have been world champion? I know everyone on the dvd said so, but I wasn't even alive when he died, so I was just wondering what fans around that time thought.
To me, it seemed like David could have been the main feud of Ric Flair and really could have made WCCW take off. It just seems to me that his death, and the subsequent deaths of Mike, Chris, and Kerry killed a promotion that could have been just as big as the WWF.
So really, kind of an open question on how you think the wrestling world would be different if the Von Erichs hadn't passed away, David in particular?

I do think that David would have been NWA World Champion, and probably a better fit then Kerry was.

He was supposed to win the title in the match that Kerry won. There's no doubt he would have been champion. Probably WWF champion too.

After watching those two DVDs... is there ANYONE who is more sympathetic than Kevin Von Erich? Very rarely do I "feel" for somebody in this crazy biz... but man, I really do feel for Kevin.

David winning the NWA belt is a myth and most likely never would have happened. It's a myth perpetuated out of his death and that alone is the only reason it isn't debunked as quickly as Jim Wilson or anyone else claiming they were in line to win the belt.
Fritz pushed hard for David to win it, but that's as far as it went. The NWA committee wasn't giving him a lot of consideration beyond that. The only reason Kerry won it was to cash in on David's death. That's the only reason, and that's why they switched it back to Flair so quickly.
World Class, for all it's plusses, is mired in myths, fables and legends that simply aren't there. Kerry was never bound for Olympic glory, David had little chance of being NWA champ, and about 75% of the rest of the story behind the Von Erichs is, frankly but sadly, B.S.

For an encore, are you gonna tell me Lance Von Erich wasn't really a Von Erich?

David might have won the NWA Title one day. Probably might not have been as soon as everyone says it would have been and even if it was, it would have been transitional just like Kerry's reign. He had the potential to be good enough and talented enough to be a top NWA Champion like Flair, Harley and Dusty were. He hadn't even hit his prime yet.

Honestly I think that he would have left WCCW for the NWA, and after feuding for the US title he would have ended up joining the Horsemen instead of Windham.

That's the sad thing about Ric Flair, he had two great up and comers , Von Erich and Magnum Ta, about to be world champions then tragedy strikes

I don't know about David but I'm sure if Kerry had not committed suicide he would have been WWF's next Ultimate Warrior(not taking the gimmick but the guy who would take that spot since Warrior wasn't doing business the right way). I think he would have gone a long way fast.

I think he would have gone a long way fast. Huh? KVE's IC title run was aborted because he wasn't cutting it. He left the WWF months before Warrior did (with a serious drug problem everyone knew about). And no one called him when the Warrior left in late '92. He died in early '93, by which point the WWF had already moved on from Warrior. I'm confused as to when you think he was going to become the WWF's next big thing.

From everything I've heard or read the only reason Kerry won the world title is because Fritz paid $65k to the NWA for Kerry to hold it for a week at the Parade of Champions.
David was a pretty good wrestler, tall and lanky, quick and a decent athlete all around. But he moderatley resembled the kid from Mask and that look probably wouldnt have gotten in over much outside of Texas. I think they pushed him as a heel when he wasnt in World Class.

David was over all the best worker of the Von Erich sons. I dare argue that Kerry was over all the better performer. He had a much stronger in ring presence. But, David most likely would have won the NWA title.

David would have been a great NWA Champion, I think he would have had one run with it. Be a heel in every territory except in Texas. It wouldn't have hurt the NWA, as it would have been traveling to Mid south, florida, mid-atlantic, japan, at that time, i think most of the other territories were about to be gone in 1984-1985. Kerry wouldn't have gotten a run if David was going to be champion.
