Why don't wrestlers sell as much as they used to anymore? I bring it up a lot as one of the main issues of the indies. WWE usually doesn't have a problem with people selling poorly (before I go further, I want to state that WWE has numerous issues, selling however isn't one of them). But like, I was watching Frightmare wrestle Brodie Lee, and like, if he sold well against Brodie, he probably would have gotten over huge, but he was running around no selling Brodie Lee after Brodie got some heat on him. And like, Brodie is a big dude, so why wouldn't you sell? And I know he's inexperienced, but, how can people forget how to sell?
Pro wrestling, it's a contest between two wrestlers (in a singles match anyway). And, you're trying to put over that fact that you're getting hurt, and that you're hurting your opponent. So, I know Frightmare is green, but he really made Brodie look really bad. And, Brodie doesn't need to look tough (though someone doesn't look tough if they're acting like they're not hurt after taking a beating, it's just that the opponent sucks because he's a wimp. And, with Brodie, he's Chikara's resident monster. So, why bury him like that?
And, the problem with selling, is it's an easy concept. Someone hits you, you act like it hurts. When someone punches you, move your head. When someone is beating you down, don't start running around and doing stuff to show you're not hurt. Even if you're not that hurt, or tired, or whatever, you're supposed to be working that fact.
So, why don't people know how to sell?

I don't like that Frightmare guy. He is Indy-tastic, and not in a good way.

I love CHIKARA, but I agree with this.
Some of the guys need to work on their psychology and selling.

Selling is getting to be a lost art. My main thought is that matches are generally quicker paced now days. I think the pace is really killing psychology. I think a lot of it on the indies, is that guys are so willing to go out there and go nuts to entertain and perform, but go so hard and fast the crowd can't react to it all. They're actually breaking their backs, but the crowd doesn't get a chance to realize it.
And take WWE for instance; you have a 3 minute match. How much selling can you squeeze in?

In a three minute match? A ton if you do it right. Selling, to me, doesn't have to be Michaels/Hogan style over the top to be effective, in fact I find it worse than no-selling. Something as simple as a facial expression, or even just changing the posture/use of an affected body part slightly can work wonders. Get your leg worked over? You don't have to hobble like an amputee, just a slight limp with appropriate grimmace when placing weight on the leg is both realistic and noticable.

I think that's a lot of the problem to. In the indies, guys are too concerned about hitting their finisher rather than taking a second to sell.

The Briscoe Bros. and Homicide come to mind. Hell, it seems like the only time Mark Briscoe sells is when he's legit hurt, and even then its not much.

look at the first MITB match as an example of why selling is important. that match went from a nice filler to a phenominal piece of wrestling simply due to chris benoit's arm. selling is important to everyone, but faces especially. to be honest, i personally reckon that selling is the number one ability a babyface should have. if i don't think you're hurt, i don't think you'll lose, and i certainly don't feel sorry for you.
and why don't many people make any noise anymore? people like flair and piper, as well as a few modern sellers like rey mysterio and punk go through matches, screaming, swearing, whatever. that adds so much more to a match. rey's really good at it. his big long scream makes you FEEL how much pain the poor little bugger's in.

Agreed. You know what the cardinal sin is to me, though? It's not "no selling", it's selling but absent-mindedly. Remember the match last year where Batista was getting his leg worked over and, mid match, started selling the injury on the wrong leg? We can talk about spot-fests killing the suspension of disbelief, but when you f***ing forget what body part you've been selling, I want to hit myself in the head with a hammer.

A few weeks back, Flair sold that camera shot to the head like he had been shot.

I love CHIKARA, but I agree with this. Some of the guys need to work on their psychology and selling. The stuff under your avatar is ridiculous. Wow, look at you making a joke of what happened. To say it is one thing, but to go about it the way you are there is pathetic.
