I agree with you 100%. A friend and I were talking last night about how people act like the real starting point for WCW was the whole Monday Night Wars stuff. I prefer the earlier years (1990-late 92) better. Lotsa cool and crappy stuff mixed in there. I think the real low point was when Hogan jumped over and had the big, long, boring feud with the Dungeon of Doom. This, I think, was around the time Bischoff took over from Kip Allen Frey and started dismantling all the things that made NWA/ WCW awesome -- like the Top 10 Rankings, emphasis on wrestling over gimmicks, the Dangerous Alliance, the big pushes for Rude, Steamboat and Arn Anderson, AWESOME old school JR, and Jesse Ventura. I actually prefer early WCW to Monday Night Wars era WCW, if I'm honest.

I have strong memories of really being into WCW during Rick Rude vs Ricky Streamboat the Dangerous Allience, Vader vs Sting etc at the time. I was pretty young but even then I prefered the back-and-forth action a lot more than cartoony characters. (funnily enough that's why I always preferred the IC matches in WWF too. In general They seemed more like balanced action).
Of course that may just be how I remember it rather thatn what it was actually like. I don't tend to look up nostalgiac matches too much.

If nothing else, try to get hold of Superbrawl II and Wrestle War 92 and, if you can, the War Games from 1991 and Steiners vs. Luger/ Sting from Superbrawl I. You wont be disappointed.

The first wrestling I watched was WCW Saturday Night in 1993. I knew a bit before then, stuff from 1991 onwards, but that was the first I actually watched.
Sting, Cactus, Vader, Steamboat, 2-Cold Scorpio & Marcus Alexander Bagwell, The Hollywood Blonds, A Flair For The Gold, Schiavone & Ventura on commentary...yeah, fun memories.
Thought Sting was super cool and Vader scary. Steamboat would always alllllmost get the win then get screwed. 2-Cold was spectacular and his attempts to get white-bread Bagwell was dance were funny.

I probably will look back at it at some point. I have very lmited access toy uotube etc so it's a conveniance thing as much as anyhtng else.
I do seem to remember really being amazed by the Steiners vs Bam Bam & Dr Death.

WCW from about 1990-1993 was a great time. Sting, Steamboat, Dangerous Alliance, Pillman, Vader, Steiners, Rhodes and Windham were all favorites of mine. At the time, WCW's talent blew WWF's out of the water. But to be honest, Hulk Hogan really ruined it for me when he showed up (although he would re-spark my interest in WCW with his heel turn a few years later).

I liked the pre-NWO WCW, particularly babyface Sting, Rude, Steamboat etc., MUCH better. WWF seemed like crappy cartoon wrestling-lite where ppl just punch and kick for 5 minutes- wow, they really haven't changed all these years. I remember WCW giving me crisp action and Japanese (and later Mexican) wrestlers and really expanding my wrestling horizons. Yeah Hogan blew it for me too. The instant he showed up, Sting was shoved over when Sting was the man in WCW (in Flair's abscence).

Yeah, this is the wrestling I grew up with. The WWF matches never made a lot of sense to me.

As I said in another thread, I loved early 90s WCW.
2003-04 was a great time to be a UK WWE/Wrestling fan. We had great Raw, great Smackdown, The Wrestling Channel, and WCW Saturday Night from 1990-92 on Thursday evenings at 7pm.
I watched it every freaking week, I loved it.
Flying Brian was awesome, I enjoyed his feud with Windham but thought Yellow Dog was goofy, even at 11-12 yrs old
I loved Stunning Steve Austin and the Dangerous Alliance. Rick Rude heeling it up and Heyman smashing phones on peoples heads (with me thinking-Thats Paul Heyman, bizzare!) was great stuff.
Sid squashing jobbers and putting them on stretchers was fun
The rare bit of Sting, Luger, Nikita Koloff and Vader footage was also lots of fun. Don';t think I saw much of Flair or Steamboat, but I do think I saw a couple Horsemen/Flair promos.
The Freebirds were of course awesome.
The Steiner Bros were also awesome.
I enjoyed DDP and the Diamond Studd, I remember watching it, surprised at early DDP and thinking "Im sure that Studd is Scott Hall. Strange."
I also remember watching OZ and thinknig "...Thats Kevin Nash. WTF?" yet enjoying it all the same.
I wish they still aired it on Sky Sports. We'd be up to 1997-98 now, prime Monday Night Wars stuff.....sigh.

I really want to get interested in older WCW that what I've seen around, specifically the late eighties - 94 era. It seems like I know a lot about the WWE, and what happened after Hogan went to WCW but there is a whole lot of great wrestling I've never witnessed.
I may invest on ebay of some old WCW vids, or anywhere else anyone knows of?

I enjoyed early WCW a lot as well. A lot great memories from 1990 - 1994.
Even though I didn't hate it when Hulk Hogan came in I thought it did change a lot from what it was.
