This has been bugging me for some time. Do WWE and ESPN have different copies of the old AWA wrestling shows, or does ESPN only have this particular library? Or is there a deal between WWE and ESPN to air these shows?

I'd like to know that myself. I'm thinking since it was broadcast on ESPN, ESPN probably had a deal with Gagne where they will always have rights to it, because it was shown on their network.

yeah, I think ESPN has broadcast rights, but only that. They can't, for instance, release an AWA DVD or AWA T-shirts.

Actually(i could be wrong on this but) I think AWA owns all the AWA shows that were broadcasted on ESPN which is a few years worth. Either that or WWE owns it and ESPN is only allowed to run it because it originally aired on there.

ESPN only owns the footage that aired on their network in the 80's and 90's, nothing else. It has nothing to do with WWE.

ESPN owns the broadcast rights to almost everything it ever broadcast. GWA!

Someone beat me to it, broadcast rights though mean ESPN can play anything from their tape library and not have to pay anyone for it.
That is why in the mid 90's ESPN had so many tough man replays because it's cheap to play.
Now instead of tough man we have AWA, and I'll take that any day.

UWF or AWA, which one makes you wince more?
Mullets, painful music, stiff announcing...

UWF or AWA, which one makes you wince more? Mullets, painful music, stiff announcing... No matter what, UWF makes AWA look like WWF during Rock N' Wrestling.

In my opinion, watching UWF is like passing a stone....hurts like hell in knowing your dealing with it, and hurts like hell during the passage, and then a healthy sigh of relief once it is all said and done. That being said, can ESPN show some WCCW matches too, or is all of the footage owned by Vince McMahon?

But UWF has so many "so bad it's good" moments, like Bruno's announcing, or Paul Orndorff coming out to MC Hammer, and of course, the famous intro.

Was WCCW on ESPN? I thought ESPN only had the AWA and it was somewhat of a shock that ESPN picked them up, but the idea was they wanted the 84' version and instead got the downhill slide.
1985 & 86 were pretty damn good years in my opinion and love watching them, when I accidently catch an 89 episode I change the channel quick.

They need to show the old GWF. Global Wrestling Federation. I remember coming home after school in the early 90's and watching it on TV. I always marked out for the Dynamite Kid who later became 1-2-3 Kid, Syxx, Syxx, X-pac, ect.
Last summer all I did was watch AWA at nights before I went to bed. It's cool that we can Shawn in his early days, and others as well. I am just mad that they never played the Turkey on pole match from the TCS.

Yeah, that is right. I was tired when I wrote that. I am still at work. But yeah it was Lightning Kid. Must have been thinking of the Bulldogs when I wrote the above post.

So speaking of the AWA and the UWF, I take it ratings are good, since they moved AWA up an hour and now show UWF in addition to it at night?

I believe UWF is only on the Friday overnight. the AWA is now on at 3 in the afternoon as well.

That's neat, If I'm not mistaken it used to run at 3 in the afternoon sometimes, maybe before the World Class run in the late 80's
