I know he made an appearance or two on TV before Backlash to hype up the angle with Rock and the McMahon-Helmsley faction, and appeared in the flesh at Backlash.
The next time he appeared was a week or two before Unforgiven to hype up his appearance at that show, and of course he appeared there as well.
Then it gets cold again until the week before No Mercy.
This is all going by Graham Cawthon's results mind you, but it seems he didn't appear at all in the month between Unforgiven and No Mercy that year.
Was Unforgiven his official return, or was it a once in awhile appearance like at Backlash?

He was kayfabe suspended by Commish Mick Foley because he kept interfering in matches after Foley had told him to stop. Foley said he was suspended until he could find the culprit of who ran over Austin. Then Austin stunned him.
And yes Unforgiven was his official return. However No Mercy against Rikishi was his first match back

I'll never forget the RAW the night after Unforgiven when Austin was in the ring with Benoit & Angle at the start of the show and gave them both stunners. Seeing Austin in the ring with 2 new guys he never faced before seemed fresh and exciting.
Then later in the night Benoit headbutted Stephanie. What a moment.

The real best part of the show: The debut of Edge doing the spear while Jeff Hardy is hanging from the belts during a ladder match. Everyone thinks they invented that at WM X7...everyone's wrong....

If you think about it, 01 shoulda been one of the best years. It was the first year they finally had ALL the big guys like Rock, Austin, and HHH wrestling at the same time. Then there were a bunch more big main eventers in Angle, Beniot, Y2J, Kane, Taker, Show...

Wrestlemania X7 is generally regarded as one of the best WMs. They made some progress in trying to elevate some new faces (Benoit and Jericho's feud with Austin in May/June, Jeff Hardy winning the IC title), but then something INVASION happened that sort of INVASION sidetracked where they INVASION going with the INVASION product. Oh well.
