Hey guys, I was browsing Wikipedia a few days ago and I was reading all of the Wrestling Observer newsletter awards. I was at the Most Disgusting Promotional Tactic category and found that the 1981 award was "won" by "Monster factory" by LeBelle Promotions? What exactly was the monster factory, and jusy why did it win the award?
Thanks for the help
Brian~

Well I don't know what your talking about but the Monster Factory wrestling school where I train at in New Jersey is one of the world most credible wrestling schools, it was opened by Buddy Rogers and Larry Sharpe in 1983 and has been training wrestlers for a long time. I love it there and would've never learned so much about this business. It is literly the best not some schools that open for 3 months, steal people's money then close

Through different stories I think the Monster in question was some storyline where a manager basically genetically engineered a "monster" to fight for him. It is nowhere near as disgusting as some of the stuff that happens today, but it was almost 30 yrs ago so take it for what you will.

I thought it was about the training school as well. Where Raven was one of the students from it. Never heard about the other one.

The LeBells promoted out of Los Angeles. Maybe someone should e-mail Meltzer and ask. I haven't been able to find anything online about it.

www.monsterfactory.com/One problem. The Monster Factory didn't open until 1984 yet wins the 1981 Most Disgusting Promotional Tactic. Strange.

Meltzer answered your question on today's Observer Radio in pretty good detail.

It was basically a wrestler who was literally supposed to be the Frankenstein monster. It wasn't meant to be taken as a gimmick, it was meant to be taken seriously that he actually WAS a monster that his manager created.

Thanks for the explanation. This thread really had me wondering.
And I'm really impressed with Meltzer for apparently responding so quickly (unless, of course, his discussion was just a really bizarre coincidence).

That may have been incredibly stupid, but I wouldn't go so far as to call it disgusting.
