You know, I didn't even think of gynmists, but I agree with Kitsune after he mentioned it. Those people have to be in crazy good shape and have crazy good skills in all sorts of areas. Very deceptive levels of upper body strength, in a lot of them.

I'd give them two different distinctions. To me the most skilled athlete has to be the baseball pitcher. But the most athletic player has to be the center halfback in soccer.

Very deceptive levels of upper body strength, in a lot of them. Especially those who have to do the rings, those guys are BUILT. In the more popular sports, I'll say NFL CB. Most people are saying WR, but I'd go with the position where you have a guy with 4.4 speed running towards you, and you have to guess which way he's going to go as you guard him one on one. Oh yeah, you also have to tackle the 245 lb guy running toward you and avoid the 325 pound lineman pulling around to decleat you. And don't you think about touching the receiver a 1/2 second too early or the QB too late, or you get a penalty.

Keeper, 24ft wide by 8ft tall goal structure, even the tallest keepers can't lay down and cover half the width of a goal. Ball heading for you at 70mph, and all you have to stop it with are padded gloves and not a whole lot else.
Midfielder, football is a 90 minute endurance test in itself, but midfielders have to run up and down the pitch forever, and they're expected to contribute to the offense, and be able to be back on defense immediately.

That list lacks soccer players, so I don"t accept it.

Goalie here too, if a soccer goalie saw more shots I would put them up there. These guys play the entire game, some facing 60 plus shots, they play 60 games a year or more, and their job is to stop a tiny black piece o rubber all while partially hunched over half the time. And they're on skates. But I also have to give a nod to MLB catchers. They take a lot of abuse woth foul tips, have to prevent the ball from getting by them, need a strong accurate arm, and most importantly study the batters, and call the game

All the mentions of baseball positions and barely anyone's mentioned catchers yet. They definitely have the toughest job in the game. In addition to the stuff mentioned above, they also need to block the ball from going wild if it's a really off pitch.
Also have to agree with gymnasts. You need to have crazy amounts of agility, dexterity, and strength to do the things they do.

Goalkeepers in Soccer.
Being one myself, your reaction times have got to be spot on. If a shot is coming towards you at high speeds you have less than a second to react and dive to prevent it from going in.
