Just a general IYO type of question, but what position in any given sport do you suppose requires the most skill and athletic prowess to play effectively at a professional level? Just off the top of my head I'd think a Wide Receiver in American style Football is a very hard one to be good at, you basically have to be a sprinter plus avoiding all the other players, memorizing the routes and be able to have good hands to catch balls on the run and many times out of reach so you have to jump around and such. That's just my opinion, whats yours?

I have to say NFL QB. There are so many things going on all at the same time that you have to process while worrying about that 350lb lineman that wants to eat you *BAM*, you just got sacked because the Cornerback that runs a 4.3 40yard dash just blitzed and you blinked at the wrong time.
You have to know every recievers route, including their secondary routes. You have to know the blocking scheme of the line, and your backs.
You have to be able to change all of that in a heartbeat if the defense shows that your play is not going to work... but wait! The Defense was using a decoy set, now you need to audible the line to crossblock,
And you have to do it in 45 seconds. That time starts counting down while you are still laying on the ground half dead because you got crushed by a human wrecking ball named Tank. Oh yeah, he probably cranked on your knee and called your momma a whore just for good measure.
Don't forget you better be flawless because if you throw a pick, 30,000 people will boo you and want to burn down your house if your last name is McNabb.

The fat guy at the bowling alley who only bowls 300s in between chain smoking cigars, drinking all the (non-lite) beer in the bar, and flirting with the 45+ year old women in the building.

Well, it's a difficult question because skill and athletic ability are two different things. For instance in baseball the pitcher is probably the most "skilled" out of all the positions, but the least athletic.

Which brings up an interesting observation, at what point did throwing a baseball 95mph become something that is not athletic?

I didn't say it's not athletic, I said it's one of the least athletic positions in baseball. I said this because not as much athletics is involved in it as is involved in the other positions.

With that said, I'll agree that shortstop in baseball and QB/WR/C in football all rank. Shortstops have to be athletically sound and smart. QB's have to stay in very good shape to be able to run some and have a great arm for throwing. They also have a ton of pressure and have to be smart when it comes to knowing where to throw the ball. WR's have to be in great shape to shake CBs and safeties and move down the field, know their routes and when to try and break off to get free to help out. Centers have to basically make a career out of taking hits to one side of their body (one arm is tossing the ball), all the while protecting the QB from someone in his face and setting the pace for the running game.

It's not that it's not an athletic skill, it's that they have the possibility of being the least fit people on the team. I think a forward in soccer/football would be high up there.

Speaking of MLB Pitchers, it seems like they might have to "play through the pain" more so then a lot of other positions.

Making Shawn Johnson's taco pop. I still can't believe this commercial made it on the air...unless a higher up at the company wanted to see if he could get it through for a joke.

I was about to say this. I can't even imagine how tough a job like this must be. Your reaction time has to be as low as possible in addition to having great reflexes. It has to be the most difficult position in all of sports.

Goalie here too, if a soccer goalie saw more shots I would put them up there.
These guys play the entire game, some facing 60 plus shots, they play 60 games a year or more, and their job is to stop a tiny black piece o rubber all while partially hunched over half the time.

Scrum Half and Fly Half in Rugby Union/ Dummy Half in League require great decision making under pressure and being the creative force for the team.
Wicket Keeper in Cricket requires concentation for extended periods, great timing and reflexes and the ability to read the ball, the batsmen, the bowler and the pitch.

You know, I didn't even think of gynmists, but I agree with Kitsune after he mentioned it. Those people have to be in crazy good shape and have crazy good skills in all sorts of areas.
