So now, I've read that the AFL took over the Portland Thunder for this season, HOWEVER, the prior owner of the Thunder still holds the rights to the name of the Portland Thunder and all that jazz. So now, the AFL is creating a whole new team in Portland for this season, but have not released a name for the team or team colors. This season of the AFL is just gonna be one massive train wreck. I'm trying to figure out how Arena Football stays alive. They brought it back from the dead 6 years ago, but they've been slowly killing it again since then due to their inability to run a league.

Just heard Capitals & Wizards owner Ted Leonsis wants to bring an Arena Football team to the DC Area I read that somewhere as well. He would be the first NBA owner that wants to have an AFL team. Which is kinda what the league wants to happen, but it's not going as well as hoped.

This going to crap again? Dammit! The AFL's been on borrowed time for a couple years now. They're trying to get NBA owners to invest into the league as well, but it's not working so well. So this might be some hope.

Just heard Capitals & Wizards owner Ted Leonsis wants to bring an Arena Football team to the DC Area I think he's better off waiting until the AFL closes and a new league with different people are willing to work together, which I think could involve the owners of some of the surviving teams (Arizona, Tampa Bay, Cleveland, Philadelphia) pooling resources with a few supporters and going to expansion markets. I still believe indoor football is viable, but it's all about knowing what to do. I mean... when it comes to hockey, and I know it's not a good example, but there's this league called the Southern Professional Hockey League that's been around for over a decade. Most leagues in hockey are gone now, and it's just them, ECHL, AHL, and something called the Federal Hockey League as far as "pros" go, but they've been able to work things out. Though, realistically, if this new league is to work, you need to establish regional rivalries and help accommodate travel for both the teams and the players.

This going to crap again? Dammit! Oof. Sorry to hear that. I've been dying for a decent indoor football team since the Firebirds folded (the Indianapolis Enforcers were a complete joke), but with this league, again... you're probably better off waiting for the league to fold and somebody else to try again with different people in charge. Heck, looking at it... a 16 team league could work out, but it'd have to be willing to try things. I'm actually ironing out a hypothetical league and want to run it through you guys and ask if it's viable. I'm using 6 of the 8 current teams in this league (Portland and LA KISS are not part of it). Oh, speaking of LA, KISS is going to play at the home opener. I expect 7,000 people to show up and leave as soon as they end.

A hypothetical arena league theory, you say?

Also last night, the Iowa Barnstormers played state rival the Cedar Rapids Titans in a preseason IFL matchup. The Barnstormers were victorious, beating the Titans 59-50. Another big point was the professional debut of Dylan Favre, nephew of HoF QB Brett Favre.

A hypothetical arena league theory, you say? *grabs a chair, sitting down* You have my attention. Well, the theory I have is the fact that the new league could work perfectly if they were able to enforce a payment system (that has to be enforced, though, because you don't want a Pittsburgh Power-type scenario where people aren't getting paid at all) as well as figuring out the perfect way to have a fair amount of profit with low overhead, and one solution would be to minimize travel by building regional rivalries. The other idea I have is to have a mixture of both big AND small, because you want to have the large markets for TV rights and noticeability, but you also want markets that will support their teams and develop a core of franchises to back around. I'm still trying to figure out key markets, but so far, I have the six AFL teams I mentioned, along with San Jose returning, as well as expansions in Washington, San Antonio, and Chicago.

Even if Sioux Falls was in this league, they would have to have at least a few opponents nearby (say, Iowa and Chicago, to name two) that could guarantee 6 games for them to play that would be real easy to travel (bus travel is cheaper than plane travel), and they would need more money to help support what would be higher costs for the roster and a bigger overhead.

My friend and I had this discussion before, and we feel that there should be one massive league with a few regions set up (Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Southwest, Northwest, and Great Lakes/Ohio Valley, for example). Each team plays a schedule of games comprised of mainly regional teams, with possible games played with a couple other regions. Then, each region plays a tournament to determine the Regional Champion, and then the Regional Champions play in a tournament to crown the Indoor Football National Champion.

*ahem* as usual, I would like the arena powers that be to give Albany a fair shake. The Capital District surrounding Albany has a population over 1 million and zero professional or major college sports teams. When the Firebirds were here, they had a great fan base, but many were disenfranchised by the uprooting of the team just one season after winning their only Arena Bowl.
Plus I'm greedy and had a great time.
That is all. Carry on.

Not trying to be a heel; I know it was really hard for the Albany fans, but I really did love the Firebirds and hated it when they folded.

Ya know, I've been thinking... if the Portland AFL Team is somehow unable to get created in the less than 6 weeks before the season opener, do you guys think that'll kill the league?

It could possibly well kill the league. And I could see the owner of the Portland Thunder coming back and putting the team in the IFL. Then you have 3 teams that are in close proximity, and fourth team that's fairly close (Billings Wolves). Granted, they've done a lot of stupid things that haven't killed it yet. So this might be interesting to watch.

I saw that this afternoon. I was like, "Okay. Didn't expect that." Then I read their article and saw that Portland has had a major steel industry for the past 150 years. And I was like, "Okay, that makes sense."

Got an email news announcement that says the Arena Football team in DC owned by Ted Leonsis is a go, although we do not know what they will be called.
