Got an email news announcement that says the Arena Football team in DC owned by Ted Leonsis is a go, although we do not know what they will be called. I saw the announcement yesterday. I hope they go with history and name the team the Washington Commandos.

The 22-game winning streak of the Sioux Falls Storm was snapped this past weekend, as they lost 60-57 to their rivals the Cedar Rapids Titans.

IFL announces Salt Lake City as 2017 ExpansionApparently this new expansion team in Utah will be led by Project FANchise, which will give the fans the ability to control the franchise themselves. I'm gonna sound skeptical, but this sounds like one massive trainwreck approaching.

So we're halfway through the 2016 Season of the Indoor Football League, and here are my thoughts for the season so far:
Storm Warning: The defending IFL Champions started off the year kinda rocky after 2 good wins against Billings and Cedar Rapids. They were sloppy on the road against Green Bay, barely beat a winless Colorado Crush team with a last second field goal, and fall in Cedar Rapids after a poor showing by their defense. After the Cedar Rapids loss a month ago, the Storm have rebounded quite nicely, wearing down the Titans in a rematch two weeks later, dominating a good Wichita Falls team, and dominating a decent Nebraska Danger team after that. They are currently 7-1 and are on top of the United Conference standings, and looking at a possible showdown against another dominant team in the United Bowl.
The Empire Strikes: The Spokane Empire, formerly the Spokane Shock of the AFL, arrived in the IFL this season, and have already shown that they're a force to be reckon with. Currently 6-1, the Empire are on top of the Intense Conference, and are looking to steamroll through the conference, and actually become the first team to win the Arena Bowl, the Arena Cup, and the United Bowl championships. With just a tough loss on the road to Billings, the Shock would be 7-0 otherwise. It's not really surprising, as Spokane has a history of being a successful football franchise, making the playoffs every year except for 2012 (even though they went 10-8) since 2006.
Crushed Ice?: Another big story was the Colorado Ice rebranding themselves as the Colorado Crush, picking up the trademark after the AFL let the trademark/copyright expire. But it's been anything but smooth sailing for the Crush. Currently, they are 0-8, even with 5 of those losses being by 8 points or less. And early in the season, the Crush owner announced he would be selling the team at the end of the season, due to terminal illness. So if the league doesn't find viable ownership before next year, we could be seeing the end of a franchise that's been around since 2006, and one of the two remaining members that are still in the league since it formed back in 2009.
Minnesota Falls Flat: At the end of 2015 season, it looked that there would be 2 teams in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, the Minnesota Axemen (formerly the Bemidji Axemen) and the Minnesota Havok (out of Mankato). However, both teams folded during the offseason, causing the IFL to redo their schedule multiple times to make up for their foldings. Discussions around the interwebs have come to a conclusion that both teams weren't financially sound or stable, so the Commissioner pulled the plug early on for both, instead of having them possibly fold halfway through the season, or have the league take over and pay for the expenses to keep the teams afloat during the season.
Nighthawks Arise: The surprise of the year so far has to be the improvement of the Wichita Falls Nighthawks. Last season, the team moved from the outdoor variation to indoors, and it wasn't pretty, with the team ending up 4-10 and last in the Intense Conference. This year, they have gone 5-2, and are second in the United Conference, right behind the Sioux Falls Storm. With the changes made from last year to this year, they could be a team to look out for in the future.
What will the second half of the season bring? Only time will tell, but it will be a thrill of a ride!

The American Indoor Football Championship has been settled.
The Columbus Lions finished their season undefeated, as they beat the West Michigan Ironmen, 74-32.
The Champions Indoor Football Championship will be settled Monday Night, as the 10-2 Wichita Force will host the 8-4 Amarillo Venom. Wichita made it by barely sneaking past the Bloomington Edge, 52-51. Amarillo had a longer road, as they defeated the Dodge City Law, 98-56, and then upset the no. 1 seed in the South, the Texas Revolution, 57-53. So this should be a good game.
The United Bowl, the IFL's Championship game, won't be for another month, but the six teams have been decided. We just have to wait to see how the games end up this weekend to find out who plays where.

The CIF season has come to an end, as Champions Bowl II was held on Monday. It was a tight battle between the North Division Champions, the Wichita Force, hosting the South Division Champions, the Amarillo Venom. In the end, Wichita brought home the 3rd championship in the past 4 seasons for the city of Wichita, defeating the Venom, 48-45.
In IFL News today, the Tri-Cities Fever have announced that they will be dormant for the 2017 season. The owners cite financial reasons for going dormant, hoping to sell the team during that time. If no suitable buyer comes forward, the team will likely fold, which sadly is a norm anymore for indoor football teams. It would be a major blow, as the team has been around for 11 seasons, and was one of 4 teams that were still in the IFL from the first 2 seasons.

The league is slowly beginning to kill itself already. Rumors have been going around that some teams haven't paid their players for a couple weeks, and I read that the LA Kiss may fold after this year, also reading that they're behind on league payments.

I liked mainly when I heard the LA Kiss may fold after this year. I always considered them a huge mistake. So, if LA, Portland (which was supported entirely by the league anyway due to the Thunder group quitting the league), and one of the Florida teams folds, then they are history, as far as I'm concerned. If teams haven't bothered paying their players, that's some TNA bullshit there.

Hopefully that'll help out west, since Spokane is all alone there.

Speaking of the IFL, the playoffs are now set!
The Nebraska Danger, the 3-time defending Intense Conference Champions, travel to Billings to to face the Billings Wolves. The winner of that matchup will head to Spokane to face the Spokane Empire.
In the United Conference, the Wichita Falls Nighthawks travel to Cedar Rapids to face the Cedar Rapids Titans. The winner of that matchup will travel to Sioux Falls to battle the defending IFL Champions, the Sioux Falls Storm.

So, the Conference Championships are set! In the United Conference Championship, the Sioux Falls Storm will host the Cedar Rapids Titans for the fourth straight year. Cedar Rapids advanced after defeating the Wichita Falls Nighthawks, 66-36. The Storm look to advance to their 7th straight United Bowl, while the Titans look to head to their first.
In the Intense Conference Championship, the Nebraska Danger travel to Spokane, WA to battle the Spokane Empire. The Danger look to advance to their 4th United Bowl, looking to win their first United Bowl, while Spokane looks to earn their first United Bowl Championship to go with the two Arena Cups and one Arena Bowl Championship. Nebraska made it by defeating the Billings Wolves, 64-52.

United Bowl XII is set. The Sioux Falls Storm won an intense United Conference Championship against their hated rivals, the Cedar Rapids Titans, 54-28. Meanwhile, the Spokane Empire took care of the Nebraska Danger, 55-44, to win the Intense Conference Championship. For the Storm, it will be a chance to earn their TENTH League Championship, and sixth straight Championship, leaving them as quite possibly the Greatest Indoor/Arena Football team in history. For the Empire, it will be a chance to earn their third different league championship for the city of Spokane (2 ArenaCups (af2) and 1 ArenaBowl (AFL) for the Spokane Shock). Also today, the AIF (American Indoor Football) announced that they would be ceasing operations, surprising very few people. The word going around is that many of the teams in the AIF will probably head to the newly formed league, the Arena Developmental League.

I think the Developmental League might have a shot.
Put in a bunch of af2 guys, keep the league regional by keeping it in the South and Midwest, and have requirements for all members and it might thrive.
I'm guessing they will have 10 AIF teams & maybe an expansion. I'd kill to have a team play at the Fairgrounds Coliseum.

The Columbus Lions and Lehigh Valley Steelhawks are the first two to join. So I'm hopeful for this league. The AIF was a garbage fire for a long time.

The Columbus Lions and Lehigh Valley Steelhawks are the first two to join. So I'm hopeful for this league. The AIF was a garbage fire for a long time. What I personally like about it is the fact that there seems to be that emphasis on presenting overall quality. I also found it interesting that the guy in charge both addressed the fact that while he does own a team, he won't present bias, and the fact that he wants this league to be as professional as possible, and I can't blame him for that. We discussed the fact that leagues tend to pop up and dissolve in the blink of an eye, and most of them are built on shaky foundations with haphazard mission statements, so they are doomed to fail. I also mentioned an expansion team should join, and they are getting the Hill County Grizzlies, who were announced to join the AIFL just days before the league folded (and will play in a lovely arena). Another expansion team they might consider is the Vermont Bucks, but I would hope to have an additional team or set of teams in western New York so that there is a buffer between Lehigh Valley & Vermont. Travel should play a factor in the survival of these leagues, so having I don't think they'll bring in all of the AIFL teams, but I think they can make a strong case for 80% of the league, and maybe create a team of their own.

And the Storm dynasty continues to roll, as the Sioux Falls Storm claim their 10th Championship, and cement themselves as one of the greatest, if not the greatest, Indoor Football Franchise in History.
