no dude seriously, they pretty much just took persona 3's battle system and said "HEY LET'S MAKE IT LIKE A FINAL FANTASY GAME! AND ADD A SCISSORING MOTORCYCLE CHICK!" not that it's a bad thing, persona 3's battle system was tolerable except for "MARIN F***ING KARIN". It's just weird how people are talking like this is the next best thing for RPG's and it's a system that's a couple of years old. atleast there's no more random battles, I think we're all thankful for that. kotaku.com/5406876/final-fantasy-xiii-impressions-looking-for-xii

Yeah, I'm not seeing much in the way of similarities either, personally. I mean, they're both turn-based JRPG battle systems...but outside of that, not really similar.

Sounds like I will be skipping my first Final Fantasy game ever. Man hating bikers, no random encounters. Blah.

I can think of RPG's going back to at least the SNES that have that. Neither is controlling one character and letting the AI handle the rest. Both of those things were in FFXII, too, which came out a good number of months before P3 did. XIII's system otherwise seems like it has a lot more in common with Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, and X-2's than Persona 3's.

I entered this topic expecting news that the characters in FF XIII shoot themselves in the head in order to summon their summons, or whatever.
Only then, will I consider FF XIII to be anywhere near Persona 3.

Are the Persona games good? I never played them but they get talked about so much around here that I'd like to try them out.

FF XII was different in that everything was constantly happening. you intiate battle in both this and P3.

So just like Lufia II, Grandia II, Grandia III, the Xenosaga series, Star Oceans 3 and 4, Valkyrie Profile, the Tales series, Chrono Cross, and many, many others then? Also, Personas 3 and 4 are pretty dang good, although I really didn't like Persona 2: Eternal Punishment. Haven't played the PSP remake of Persona yet. Kinda looking forward to Persona 3 Portable as it gets rid of mandatory AI control and allows you to directly control your other party members like Persona 4.
