Second daytime show to be cancelled in a short time. This one after 54 years. Never seen it but it must suck for fans, I understand they're pretty passionate about their shows, like we are with wrestling. NEW YORK, NY, Dec. 8, 2009 – As The World Turns, the long-running daytime drama, will complete its final season on the CBS Television Network in September 2010. CBS has decided not to renew the show for the 2010/2011 broadcast season, thereby ending its 54-year run on the Network.
“Throughout our history, As The World Turns has remained dedicated to sharing compelling stories that have entertained fans for more than five decades,” said Executive Producer Chris Goutman. “We are disappointed and saddened by the news that the show is not being renewed. It will certainly be a loss for all of us, and for the show’s loyal audience.”
“As The World Turns has been a cornerstone of our business and a tremendous asset to the company,” said Brian T. Cahill, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, TeleNext Media, Inc. “We are proactively seeking a new outlet to carry the show, and are open to exploring innovative formats and relationships that will enable the future success of ATWT.”
The epitome of multi-generational, serial storytelling, As The World Turns has been entertaining generations of fans for more than half a century. The show boasts a well-loved and long-tenured cast, including actress Helen Wagner (Nancy Hughes) who spoke the first words on the premier broadcast of ATWT in 1956. To this day, Nancy is still at the helm of the Hughes family, earning Wagner the distinction of portraying the longest-running character in television history.
Other veteran cast members still on the show today include Eileen Fulton (Lisa Grimaldi) and Don Hastings (Dr. Bob Hughes) who each have played their characters for 49 years; Marie Masters (Dr. Susan Stewart) with 41 years; and Kathryn Hays (Kim Hughes) who has starred on the show for 37 years.
As The World Turns has tackled many contemporary themes over the years, including AIDS, Alzheimer’s, alcoholism and more, while remaining true to the show’s rich history and realistic characters. In 1988, the serial made history by introducing daytime television's first gay male character, Hank Eliot (played by Brian Starcher), for which it was honored at the first annual GLAAD media awards in 1990.
Created by Irna Phillips, As The World Turns premiered on April 2, 1956 as a 30-minute live television show, unprecedented at the time for a soap opera. Top-rated from 1959 to 1971, it was the first daytime serial with its own spin-off, Our Private World, which aired in prime-time. The show switched to color on 1967, and expanded from a half-hour in length to one hour in 1975. Over the years, ATWT has been awarded numerous accolades, including 58 Daytime Emmy awards.
Set in the fictional Midwestern town of Oakdale, As The World Turns launched the careers of many now-famous Hollywood celebrities, such as Dana Delaney, James Earl Jones, Julianne Moore, Parker Posey, Meg Ryan, and Marisa Tomei to name a few.

The only thing I remember about this show is that they used to do a spoof of it on The Carol Burnett Show called As The Stomach Turns. From what I remember, it was real funny stuff.

Although it bites for the soap nuts, it's good news for the game show fans. This means, we're probably getting 2 new shows on CBS, game show wise. Odds are they are Pyramid and Press Your Luck.

Daytime Soap Operas have been rendered less and less relevant with the expansion of Cable Television and lets admit something:
Most network "drama" primetime programming today are a slicker, bigger budget version of the traditional soap opera. This isn't even a new phenomenon. See Dallas and Lost.
FUN FACT - "Soap Operas" got their name because the original daytime melodramas produced on radio were (and still are on TV) advertized by products aimed at women, namely housewives....like soap.

I bet my mom is angry. CBS soaps are the only ones she watches, and thus I ended up growing up with them in the background. Wasn't Guiding Light the other one that got canceled (which is my mom's favorite, BTW)?

Interesting theory, although the fact that the shows didn't really create a new gen of fans was the reason for their demise. Viewership of soaps actually peaked in the 1980s and has been down since. |

Yeah that's a good point. Though consider the 80s was when cable TV started to expanded without stoppage, so again that builds into my argument.
Up to even the 70s/80s, you had what 3 basic networks? Not everyone had cable, so you were limited in your soap opera choices. Its what the average rating for a Star Trek episode back in the day is probably still better than a good portion of the current network primetime line-up.

Good point. The younger generations grew up not having attachment to the old soaps because they had many more choices. Thanks to streaming video and high-speed Internet, its hard to imagine a single entity having the ratings that the MASH finale got. All network TV has suffered. First went SatAM cartoons after Nick and CN showed up. Then went most of the action/sci-fi stuff on network TV (although its been getting a slight revival lately). Soaps are just the latest victim because the fixed audience that stayed with them is old and diminishing in size.

Well that sucks. It wasn't my cup of tea, but I hate to see a TV cornerstone go. I mean, what about the fans of... Although it bites for the soap nuts, it's good news for the game show fans. This means, we're probably getting 2 new shows on CBS, game show wise. Odds are they are Pyramid and Press Your Luck. ...I mean, good riddance. Sorry, but I want me some big bucks. I thought the Dean Cain Pilot of Pyramid which was being tested as a replacement for Guiding Light until LMaD got it should have been sold IMO hopefully it does get a second look. |

It'll definately get a second look. However, it needs to be instead of the $1,000,000 Pyramid to the $100,000 Pyramid of old. Then it would be within budget friendliness of CBS, and play it like the Pyramid of old and voila. I just hope we get a decent host. Michael Davies can revive a show, but has awful tastes in hosts. |

It has less to do with cable television and more to do with there being far less housewives watching daytime TV. Adult women are, by far, THE primary demographic of soap operas and with more and more women getting full time careers over the years, it's decreased the viewership of soap operas by a significant margin. As the World Turns was my first soap opera as I used to watch it with my mom over the summer as a kid. I still watch it now and I'm pretty sad to see it go. Now if CBS ever cancels The Young and the Restless, there will be hell to pay! |

Young and the Restless ratings are down but its still number one. Bold and the Beautiful ratings are also down but its locked at 2. Days of our Lives is now at 3 with a resurgence over the last year and the only soap to have gained viewers and not kept or loss viewers.
Despite the James Franco stunt on General Hospital, its ratings have gone down. One life to live and All my Children are last and second to last now. All my Children did their LA move this fall to save money but One lif to live is still in NY and now going to be in last place. My guess it could be next.
