Now, I know there are a lot of people here who complain about WWE's product. Then I realize there are a marginalized amount of those people who say "if you don't like the product, don't watch it". Well, with a semi-good night of TV on TBS to counter RAW, I switch back and forth. Usually I'll talk to a friend and he'll tell me when something good comes on, but last night I had to fend for myself.
Instead of doing a regular RAW review and complaining about what I don't like, I want to try out doing a RAW review critiquing what I saw, and then tell you what I did instead of watching WWE's crap. JR said "if you don't like the product, change the channel" and last night I showed those bastards that I was serious about not watching their product. After watching RAW religiously since 1998 this was a hard thing to do, but RAW now-a-days seems just as the title intends, RAW, like the kinda raw your throat gets when your sick.
I'll let you guys decide who had the better TV experience last night, and if any of this sounds good, I suggest you do the same. Also, if you would like to see reviews in this kind of manner maybe I will start to write them, as such. I have never seen anyone do them this way, and seems to be a neat spin on the tried and true.
Now time for the review.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Opening/John Cena vs. AAE - What I saw
9:00 hits and my TV is set to USA. On the computer I hear the background noise of "BARABU" and then turn around to see Cena's video. This signals me to turn the channel to TBS. I read that the match was going to start the show off, so I was warned. Friends was playing and it was the episode where Phoebe finds out that there is a porn star that looks just like her. I was never a fan originally, but my girlfriend got me into it, and found it much better than any Cena match. I thought the guy would be so much more dirty in gimmick and more edgy when he was drafted in '04, but was I wrong!
Opening/John Cena vs. AAE - What I missed (from reports)
Something about Cena sniffing a cigar, $100 bills and Nitro saying stuff about K-Fed.
Nitro Challenge/Carlito and Jerry Lawler vs. Chris Masters and Viscera - What I saw
I switched back to see Nitro and that guttervery *friendly* person Melina. Instantly I switched back. Sadly, TBS was at commerical too, so it was constant back and forth. I saw King get up and get into the ring. Then I heard Lillian announce the tag match and saw Carlito come down. After I saw the team of Vis and Chris I changed back. At this point, Pheobe meets up with the porn star that has her name, and tricks the bank into sending the porn star's checks to her mailbox(?). She catches some guy looking at her and screams "Yeah you know me from a porno, hey lady your boyfriend is a perv porno watcher" or something of that sort. Switch back to RAW and Carlito rolls Vis up for the win. Yay?
Nitro Challenge/Carlito and Jerry Lawler vs. Chris Masters and Viscera - What I missed
Nothing important probably, but Wrestlezone says I missed a Masterlock and Masters being pushed into Vis. Yippie. Yeah, WWE has a great mid-card showing when they need to use King and Vis to fill out a mid-card tag team match. Too bad this isn't Smackdown where everyone except Book, Tista, and Taker are mid-carders.
Backstages/WGTT vs Highlanders - What I saw
I'll admit, this was the highlight of RAW for me. Cryme Time was being ghetto and pulling tricks on them Highlanders/Bushwackers v2. Some weird guy cheering them on though, who the hell was he? Haas comes in and says that Cryme Tyme need to stop the stereotypical black stuff. I like it, personally, until Gerwitz gets his hands on it (and you know it's him from the promo last week). Why does JTG need to sing all the time? His white people impersonation was bad. Since Nova makes OVW guys research veterans, I think JTG needs to research black comics. Shelton comes in and says the same thing Haas says, but it feels better since he's black and saying it. Then Haas, making no sense what-so-ever to what he was just adovcating before, says stereotypical black things. Then the Highlanders tell us that they didn't know Haas was black. Now that I found funny, I must admit.
Edge, Orton and Kenny are in a room, and I think I'm starting to like Rated RKO, but I hate the name. They are a solid team though. Kenny looks so off compared to them, so I change the channel. It's some kind of Friends "What If" episode. More interesting than Kenny but not the WGTT.
The match itself was forgetable, but the finisher was pretty cool. The move doesn't seem very wrestling like in terms of double team finishers, but would hurt like hell in real life -- it just didn't come off that way. WGTT seemed a bit off, but it was logical considering this is the first time they have tagged in a long while. Not sure if it was rust or planned that way, but it worked on a scale that it made me think and not feel like an idiot. But another roll-up win? C'mon!
Backstages/WGTT vs Highlanders- What I missed
Kenny being uninteresting? But not much missed though. How come he was the only one who escaped that big treasure box to OVW? He sucks too, it's not like he is pouring greatness out of his ass. And he needs a nose job. I hear HHH/Edge is next, so I turn to TBS.
Edge vs. HHH/Dx and Flair vs. R-RKO and Kenithan - What I saw
Family Guy is on now, and the episode escapes my mind because I was too busy looking at stuff online. Ah, I was reading Fark to check out some funny news. I learned 33 new words and 10 sexual positions....that I already knew. After my 20 minutes of FARKing, I switched to RAW out of curosity. Flair's music is playing and HHH beats up a chair with his sledgehammer, because, yanno, chairs can feel pain.
Edge vs. HHH/Dx and Flair vs. R-RKO and Kenithan - What I missed
A 69 T-Shirt, HBK a huge Flair pop (yay divorces!) and another roll up. Wait, the correct term in THIS situation is a small package, according to Wrestlezone. What's the difference? So far it makes every match I've seen end in a roll-up though. It's almost like Nitro's DQs!
K-Fed on Phone/Victoria vs Torrie - What I saw
Hearing JR say that Victoria is up next made me excited. Sadly, I find the woman's division on RAW the most exciting thing on. Well, let's backtrack to Nitro talking to K-Fed on speaker phone. K-Fed, Melina and Nitro. Who has the most talent out of the three? K-Fed, by far. Nitro sounds stupid trying to talk like K-Fed, and then they leave because Hardy has a match with Umaga, and they can't watch from the monitor of course, so they leave K-Fed in limbo. Even though the match isn't even next, they HAVE to leave for invested interest. For a match. That takes place like 20 minutes from the time they were told about it. Farooq comes in, and hears K-Fed cutting the whole "Is anybody there" crap. So he says "DAMN". IT'S NOT FUNNY, WWE! Good God almighty. It wasn't funny the first time, so stop it! He gets a pop because he's a star, not because the writing is good. I expect him to be in the next Mortal Kombat. Instead of "Toasty" we get "DAMN".
Victoria vs Torrie was good. Torrie is still bad in the ring, but whatever. Victoria has her checklist, which is the biggest innovation in WWE storylines in recent history. I have never seen it before, and it makes me interested. Unlike the title fueds and DX. Those aren't innovative. Just tried and true. But can't not give them credit for trying to milk something that was hot, I just wish they knew how to create the next thing already. Victoria bites off a nail, which looks HUGE when they zoom up on it, kinda like she took off the entire finger. But it was innovative as well, haven't seen that before that I can remember. Widow's Peak for the win, and Victoria does have a Widow's Peak, whuddathunk it? Another checkmark off the list, and I am amazed at how she can make them all the same size week after week. Obviously, Victoria excels in many fields, not just wrestling.
K-Fed on Phone/Victoria vs Torrie - What I missed
An episode of Family Guy I've seen so many times from the first or second season that they all blend into my brain. The third season starts looking better animation-wise, so you can tell. And the last two seasons are overly dumb, so you can tell. I gotta admit, for a good while there RAW had me entertained. Until I heard Hardy and Umaga next.
Umaga vs. Hardy/Cena vs. Nitro - What I saw
Upon hearing that, no more RAW for me. New episode of Family Guy, but again I forget what it was. I was overly tired at this time and fell asleep. I blame the lobster bisque from The Soup Man stand in the mall. I felt tired ever since I tried that. By the way, it's WAY too expensive, but nice for the Seinfeld touch. Next time I go to the Deli store across from it in the food court.
Umaga vs. Hardy/Cena vs. Nitro - What I missed
A thumb to the neck, a chair and and FU. This happens EVERY week. I know wrestling promoters aren't the smartest, but c'mon! When a fan wants to SLEEP instead of even waiting to check out the show on the commericals, you know you have a bad product at hand.
Oh, and they hyped Cena vs K-Fed afterwards I assume? Battle of the White Boy Redneck Rappers Jan 1st, only on USA. And afterwards, a preview of Nashville's Starsearch, hosted by some black cowboy! Wow how the tides have turned, lol (and I don't mean it in a racist way, just saying).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And there you have it. So give me what you think of this. I know it's short, but you know, I think it's a good idea. There ARE alternatives to watching crap on TV, even if you don't like Monday Night Football or Grey's Ananomy, like myself. You can still get a decent night of comedy shows, instead of a wrestling show that tries to be a comedy show.
And it all comes back full circle to what I said about the people who complain about the product. Don't watch it. Hopefully this review will change some people's minds about watching RAW, even though they hate the product. And I'll admit, it was me up until a few weeks ago. I would normally just keep RAW on for background and go on my PC for two hours. But now I don't even want to give them the satisfaction of one more head in the Nielsen ratings for a show I don't enjoy anymore. I advise anyone who hates the product to do what I do, and pick and choose what you want to see.
Who knows, maybe if you are like me and just tune in to see the interesting parts, maybe Haas and Benjamin will get pushes and Cena will be phased out for a while. If the ratings show it, then it is a justifiable wish.
