No one else was doing sod all to help out at the time. The USA was so embarassed by the Brits doing something that they created We are the World. It sold in droves, made an absolute fortune for charity and paved the way for even more money to be made for that charity. At least Geldof and Ure did something, because no one else was doing f*** all. Why hate on people for taking time out to help others?
For the record, Bono has always been and will always be a douche.

I'm not ripping on them for helping out, I'm ripping on the song. Oh yeah and Bono. Actually my beef lies only in the lyrical content and Bono.
"The greatest gift they'll get this year is life." that's a good thing that they are making out to sound like a crappy present.
And also for the record I have not stopped singing that song all day.

Another one - "There won't be snow if Africa this Christmas time", Is there ever snow in Africa? Mount Kilimanjaro If you look closely you can see a bridge between the two peaks.

I guess I'm the only one who likes Wonderful Christmas Time? It's cheesy yes but I like it's charm. Can't understand the hate for that song at all, its one of the bearable Christmas songs. So cheesy its good.

Speaking of Christmas songs...
Why do we consider Jingle Bells a Christmas song, when it doesn't contain mentions of Jesus, Christmas, Santa, Santa's reindeer or presents??

For many reasons I hate this song. I liked it when I was a kid. I like the music and melody are decent but the lyrics just suck. Worst lyric - Bono singing "Well tonight thank god it's them instead of you", to me that is just a jackass statement. I hate Bono. Another one - "There won't be snow if Africa this Christmas time", Is there ever snow in Africa? "The clanging chimes of doom"? Do they know it's Christmas? No They live in AFRICA and don't celebrate Christmas. A lot of those countries are Muslim anyway. Worst Christmas Song Ever. Yeah, not a fan of it that much anymore, but John Lennon's / Yoko Ono's Christmas song makes me that much more ill. Could it be the number of times that it's played in an hour? Ono's friggin' voice? I don't know for certain, but ugh.

I think its not that they wanna help the people in Africa, but the way they do it (especially with Bono acting like a douche about it, like at one U" concert to get people to phone Bush and Blair and tell them to do something about the poverty in Africa this was after g8.. and these people have got enough to do running their countries n stuff..and half the African governments are corrupt and rack up debt with Private jets n crap.. I could go on)
and the "they are doing something" thing sure they made the recod and done Live Aid and didn't get pay for it (I think ) its free advertising for em, and think of the Millions they could give to the cause..but they don't
and a question, at the Live 8 concert, how many went to see it, wore the white wristbands..andwalked past hungry homeless beggers.. I may sound racisit/xenophobic, but we should focus on our own unfortunates first

The song, while doing a ton of good for people in Africa, was basically one big ass celebrity filled guilt trip that I didn't need (mainly due to being like 8 years old at the time). Sorry Boy George, you're not guilt tripping me.

I would also like to add something about George Michael and charity. Not only did he sing on Band Aid, he also donated the royalties to Last Christmas/Everything she Wants to Band Aid too. Which considering that sold over a million copies, was a great gesture. (I'm biased though as I semi-worship George Michael).

George Michael is way under rated as a song writer.
Bono=massive wanker.

"Well tonight thank god its them instead of you"
Thanks, I was 5 years old at the time and needed a guilt trip from a billionaire rockstar. I really enjoyed my new Nintendo that year with world hunger over my shoulder.
Whats next a beautiful easter harmony
"Today you hunt for eggs, they're hunted for SPORT!"

A few things...
Firstly, Bono wasn't a billionaire in 1984. This was before Joshua Tree; U2 was barely out of the club scene and still opening arenas for bigger bands at that time. Second, his line "Tonight Thank God..." is, IMO, the best and most poignant line to come out of that song. It means that you should be thankful if you were blessed enough to be born in an industrialized country, and appreciate what you have, because there are so many people who don't. Not that you should be ashamed at what you have because Africans don't have the same. And the thing is, when Bob Geldof presented this song to Bono, that was the one line he didn't want to sing, because he knew it would be misconstrued. But this is what Geldof wanted Bono to sing because of its message.
And as for the song, it does come off as pretentious, and isn't very good musically or lyrically, but what I think it suffers from the most would be that it ages horribly. How many of these guys are still around, and still relevant? And the more you hear it, the more hokey and stuck up it sounds. It is overplayed ad nauseum every December.

Actually the thing with Bonos line is his delivery, its the way he sings it as well..
The thing I hate is the fact that Chritmas is the one day I wanna FORGET all the worlds problems. for one day
its worse when they made te 3rd one and during the ending of the video its got Saint Bob Geldof Pointing to a screen, very theatrical looking away with that "REMEMBER WHY YOU AREDOING THIS" and it shows the starving kids.. its like "Come on..we KNOW what its like"
I defer to Professor Sam Kinison to explain things

I know a woman who raised 3000 bucks and went to her home country of Afghanistan and among other things paid for a surgery that saved someone's life. Goodness can happen, even with a half baked song. That's one reason why I respect Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. I may not agree with them on many subjects, but when they say people should help, they get ON A FREAKING PLANE AND GO HELP THE PEOPLE! I'ts one thing to say end world hunger. It's another thing to personally hand food to hungry people - without the cameras being there, I might add
