For many reasons I hate this song. I liked it when I was a kid. I like the music and melody are decent but the lyrics just suck.
Worst lyric - Bono singing "Well tonight thank god it's them instead of you", to me that is just a jackass statement. I hate Bono.
Another one - "There won't be snow if Africa this Christmas time", Is there ever snow in Africa?
"The clanging chimes of doom"?
Do they know it's Christmas? No They live in AFRICA and don't celebrate Christmas. A lot of those countries are Muslim anyway.
Worst Christmas Song Ever.

I don't know.....
Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmastime" may be worse.
Its a stupid, thoughtless pop song with a 1970s space synthesizer with the same awful chorus repeated ad nausea.

It was good when they did it the first time (Although I agree the lyrics are daft) but doing it another 2 times was just overkill & pointless.
Plus the other versions were just horrid

Actually, a lot of Africans celebrate Christmas. So I'm sure a lot of them are aware of the holiday.
I don't know why, but it seems like a lot of those "let's all sing for charity" songs have absolutely atrocious lyrics. How about We Are The World? "As God has shown us, by turning stone to bread." I mean... no one in USA For Africa bothered to correct this?
Even if the lyrics weren't atrocious, it's annoying enough that they think getting together and singing a song is this great thing. Like they're that important. You have to at least give Bono credit for DOING something more than just sing music. He may be full of himself, but he's acting like he really is the king of the world or something. And is actually, you know, helping people.

Just watched the music video and now I'm incensed. For two reasons:
1. The pun. When they sing "sting of tears" they focus on Sting. OH COME ON!
2. If everyone involved in this song had given half of what they owned to Africa, it would have been far more successful than the actual song. And they're so damned pleased about singing the song.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't Kool and the Gang be in the other song.
And why is it that there are guitars being played yet the song is so overloaded with sythesizer that you can't hear the guitars?
The only moment of decent musicality is Phil Collins drum fill at about 2:37

I didn't realise it was as close to Christmas as it is until I looked at the date yesterday. Thought there was still 2 weeks to go. That's what we're talking about, right?

No, we are talking about how there are no rivers in Africa this Christmastime.
And also how much we hate that Paul McCartney song.

The First one was ok at best, the second as worse as it had for the most part flash in the pan singers and Cliff "I wish I had been invited to the first one" Richard
And the 3rd..well it was a cynical move to be honest
what gets me about the song in general Is the patronising attitude, and yeah they could help the rd world financially more than any of us EVER could
its taking money from the poor to feed the even poorer
