I'm confused a bit about this. You've stands for You have right? So shouldn't You've a girlfriend be considered proper because you're really saying "You have a girlfriend?"

I think it's a little different because of the usage of "have." In something like "you have a gift," "have" implies ownership. In the other usage, "you have done something wrong / you've done something wrong," "have" is more of a helper with "done" so it means something slightly different.
I would bet that you're right, as far as language rules go, but it just sounds weird because nobody uses it that way.

It can be used but you have to put the word "got" between you've and the "a" in order to sound right.
