I'll admit that my knowledge of NES games before 1985's Super Mario Bros. is limited, so I come here to ask -- what was the console's killer app before Mario?

Kung Fu?
Or Duck Hunt. It was THE zapper game on the system. so popular that it was bundled later with Mario.

Keep in mind that a killer app usually refers to a game so popular that large numbers of people are willing to buy the hardware just to play it. Considering that initial sales of the Famicom weren't all that strong, I'm not sure it had one pre-SMB.

NES was launched in the US with Super Mario Bros. so......
That said, it was probably Donkey Kong if you're talking Famicom.

Wikipedia (the purveyor of all truths) says it was a launch title, but says the game was released in March like you said. That said, I tried the old Google search and most places say it was a launch title, but hold the March date as its release (despite the NES already being out for 6 months). Hmm....

Probably it's first Non-Bundle release.

Yeah, when I got my Nintendo it was the one with Gyromite and Duck Hunt, but they did have two different bundles. One with R.O.B. and one without, which I THINK had SMB with it. I know they were available at roughly the same time because I knew I was getting an NES for Xmas that year, looked at the size of the box and figured it was the smaller version and was amazed when it was the one with ROB. Of course, one session of Gyromite later and I realized it was just so much easier to put ROB away, put the red and blue button control on the ground and just use my feet.

I never even seen ROB in the stores, I remember MARIO coming with the system and thought it WAS the first game on NES.

There absolutly was a deluxe set with R.O.B., zapper gyromite and duck hunt, as well as a standard bundle with just NES and Mario. No google required here, you don't forget staring at a Nintendo display at Kmart and vowing that it WILL be yours. As to the question there was NO game people wanted more than Mario. Sure it was fun to play some Kung-fu or exictebike but you kept going back to Mario. There was nothing else like it no console game had ever had as much hidden stuff to find and worlds to explore. The first hit was free man. Then the fun club newsletter told us of a shiny new game called Legend of Zelda that would actually let you SAVE your game and go back to it!!! I feel old.

I got the ROB system that Christmas. I also got Baseball, Excitebike, and two other games I don't recall.
First game I actually bought was 10-Yard Fight. I played the hell out of it at the movie theater and thought it would be cheaper in the long run to just own it.

"Pinball" was a simple, yet pretty fun game (including a Mario and Pauline cameo in the bonus stage). "Clu Clu Land" was also pretty addictive. I do want to say that "Super Mario Bros." was always available when the American NES came out, whether as a pack-in or separately.
