I'd give it to World of Warcraft, although that's not as much a game as it is a video crack addiction. It can be quite addicting, can't it?

I think the case is made, very well in fact, for Grand Theft Auto 3 for Game of the Decade simply because it dragged gaming kicking and screaming into the mainstream.
Yeah, Mario's sold tonnes before, so did Zelda and the Playstation but this was the first time people paid attention to games, good publicity or bad publicity, and began to get us to the point we are now where games like Modern Warfare 2 can sell bucketloads and so can a game like Guitar Hero and Rock Band.

I started this topic because I knew there would be debate, and thats always a good thing. I love Rock Band 2, but I wouldn't have named it the game of the decade either.
I will say this though, last night at my company's Xmas party, I took the whole Rock Band setup, and most of the people there weren't gamers at all, but they had a blast singing and playing along. I don't think these people would have had as much fun with Wii Sports.

No-one can convince me that anything other than Persona 4 was the video game of the decade.

If we're talking about games that helped cross over to casual audiences, Guitar Hero is where Rock Band came from, but the one game that truly reigns above all others is the almighty World of Warcraft. Everyone and his mother plays it and has for years.
AP doesn't know what it's talking about.

It's gotta be Super Mario Galaxy, the SMB3 of 3D gaming.

Grand Theft Auto 3 broke, then fixed the world. It has to be Game of the Decade.

Good case for GTA 3. I'm impressed having read that, because thinking back thats what brought me back into gaming. I had quit after the Genesis/SNES era, was too confused by 3D graphics. Wasn't ready for it yet.

The thing about Guitar Hero and Rock Band is that Rock Band took what Guitar Hero was good at and refined it, whereas Activision pretty much used Guitar Hero as an excuse to bleed people dry of any money they still had left.

The Sims. Top selling PC game, and first game to appeal to girls as much as it did to boys. I think that's an better accomplishment than Simon with a Soundtrack.

I think the Pokemon games were the first true games to be loved by both sexes equally. Hell, now more girls play Pokemon games than guys!

WOW wouldn't have happened if Everquest didn't exist, and EQ wouldn't have existed without Ultima Online and so forth. You can use this example with lots of games. Which makes it real hard to pick a game of the decade.

Rock Band 2 DEFINITELY wouldn't have existed if it wasn't for Guitar Hero. And Guitar Hero wouldn't have existed without Guitar Freaks. See what I mean? You can't really make that case for GTA3, though. It is one of the first true open world games, and is the first one I can remember. And we can't really say it wouldn't have existed if not for the previous GTA games, because GTA3 was COMPLETELY different from the previous ones.
