Is anyone else on here a fan of this series of fantasy novels by George R.R. Martin. I never consider myself a fantasy fan, but a friend of mine kept telling me to read these books. Now I consider them among my favorite books. The only complaint I have is that the author takes his sweet time writing. There are still three books to be released ( There are four books already out.), and most fans don't expect the next book (The one in my sig.) until 2011.
HBO is also thinking of making it a TV series. They have already shot the pilot, and are going to decide in March wether to take it to series.

I love that series, and sometimes I hate it so much that I love it.
And I know there's at least 1 more fan on here. The Kingslayer himself stalks this forum.

HBO is more than thinking, they've started filming the pilot with the series all but certain unless the pilot really sucks. My friend is a big fan of the book series but is not going to watch the pilot and series. He pictures the characters as actors and doesn't want the series to change his view. What do you think of Fred Ward as Ned? Randy Savage as the Hound?
I've never read the books but because my friends a fan I do know stuff about it. He doesn't expect the Martin to finish the series. I think Dance with Dragons will come out but that's it.
What do you think of the controversy of fans asking him if he'll name a successor to finish the series like Wheel of Time? I know he said if he dies before he can then its done and he'll nver say how it ends. I like Martins blog because he mostly talks about Jets and Giants and I know that pisses off fans too which makes me laugh.

As for Martin finishing the series I also have serious doubts. Martin is no spring chicken, and isn't in the best shape in the world.

If Martin doesn't finish the series or name a successor who can do so, then there'll be fanfics abound to do so for him... and that'd make him roll around in his grave, given that he apparently doesn't think well of fanfics.

My wife loves the series but refuses to read past the first few until it's finished. Being a Wheel of Time fanatic apparently waiting decades for books in one series is her limit.

Martin will probably have people in charge of his estate find those fanfics and have them removed.
I know some hope that a series will light a fire up his ass to finish but it will probably just a be a distraction instead. Besides, the series probably won't go beyond A Clash of Kings due to costs.

Enjoyed the books a lot, and two years ago I was frantic for DWD to come out. However I just don't care anymore. I've forgotten so many details of these books and I'm not rereading them all to get back up to speed. I highly doubt it will ever have a proper ending anyway, so I'm pretty much cool with ending here. Plus it annoys me that Martin could care less as long as the cash is coming in. I'll stick to old pulp fantasy stuff, I like it better anyway.

burned my way through the first 4 in October. awesome books. I kinda think the next one will be the last one, though. I really don't see how he could possibly stretch it out any longer. unless he gives us more "people you don't care about acting like idiots in Dorne" crap.

"So many vows...they make you swear and swear. Defend the king. Obey the king. Keep his secrets. Do his bidding. Your life for his. But obey your father. Love your sister. Protect the innocent. Defend the weak. Respect the gods. Obey the laws. It’s too much. No matter what you do, you’re forsaking one vow or another."Yes, I suppose they're decent books. No, it really is an excellent series, and I never feel like I'm championing hyperbole when I say that A Storm of Swords is one of the greatest fantasy novels ever written. Of all the entries in the series thus far, it's the one I keep coming back to - sometimes just to shake my head and wish I could do it half as well. That being said, I have strong feelings as to Ser George the Dilatory. The wait was intolerable a year ago (regardless of what Neil Gaiman says), but it ruffles this lion's oathbreaking mane that he keeps his blog around to peddle stuff like water-damaged books and that painfully dull Wild Cards series. Seriously, you've got thousands of people ready to give you money for Dance. You'll be okay. If he'd just come out and said, "Guys, the pressure and hype around this book is enormous, to the point where I can't possibly get it out quickly and I need to take some time to rest and creatively synchronize when I tackle it again", I guarantee you there'd be far less complaint about the wait. But he just keeps throwing up deadlines like they're grappling hooks and he can't quite hit the top of that cliff to haul himself up. Well, if it results in a stronger book than A Feast for Crows, I won't mind, but even I can only maintain excitement for so long. A knight of the Kingsguard eventually gets tired of having **** for honor, and a fan gets tired of rereading those interminably long chapters about that mewling Stark whelp and his green dreams. Should have told Bolton to give that one my regards...

I got a couple of these books for Christmas last year, and while I was enjoying what I was reading, I think I let myself get distracted and didn't really get through them as quickly as I wanted to. High time I gave them another chance.

It definitely seems that Martin is more interesed in going to conventions, and being fawned over by fans than finishing the books. All I want for now is ADWD and I will be happy.

I'm just amazed that the guy has 1100 manuscript pages (which makes it longer than AGoT and AFFC) and is still not finished. Maybe we should take to calling it A Dance with Delays...

I'm a huge fan and I check everyday to see if Dance is finished. I don't expect him to finish the series and have lowered my expectations of him doing so but i do really want to see ADWD come out. I am not a fan of GRRM himself but I do like ASOIAF.
