I can't think of any nicer way of putting it then this guy is a f***ing idiot. I've seen a few minutes of Outer Space Astronauts before and after ECW and it's the worst thing I've ever seen. This guy and Bonnie Hammer have no taste. Which reminds me... bring back Homeboys in Outer Space!

A smug, empty-headed network president who thinks he knows his audience. How refreshing.

Yeah this guy is stupid.
The MST3K stuff was bad enough... but going into how five years ago they didn't have a strong 18-35 demographic? If that's "the fact", that was only because the demographic wasn't represented that strongly (i.e. college representation that we're seeing now.) Almost everyone I know who watched Sci-Fi back then and Sy-Fy today falls into the 18-35 demographic. I think my dad's one of the few exceptions I know.

Dave Howe: Did you like Tripping the Rift – not Tripping the Rift, Outer Space Astronauts?
Troy Rogers: Yeah actually I like them both. They’re really funny.

It's not surprising. MST3K was one of the last shows picked up by the old guard of The Sci-Fi Channel before Bonnie Hammer came in to wreck the place (and promptly cancel MST3K).
"Syfy" got lucky with Battlestar Galactica, but I'm sure they have no idea what made it work and just think it was excessive "darkness" (see Stargate Universe for their laughable attempts at replicating it).

This from a guy who obviously thinks it's okay to run nothing but the shittiest of the shit movies on the weekends. And unfortunately, most of them aren't cheesy enough to be entertaining. ;D

This is the network that actually produced sequels to two of Uwe Boll's films and kept him on as a producer and consultant for said films (House of the Dead and Bloodrayne)
I used to like SciFi, sometimes it could surprise you back in the day with what was on. But now you flick it on and 95% of the time its an utter crap movie made by SyFy which is painful to watch and no redeeming fun in how bad they are.

Yeah, back in the day Sci-Fi actually had some cool stuff (MST3K being their crown jewel, but stuff that actually celebrated science fiction and horror without descending into total geekdom... I miss all the magazine-style and collecting shows they would run).
I really wish Battlestar Galactica had aired on another network, because it was far too superior to share network space with the likes of Stargate Atlantis (and this is coming from someone who liked the early years of Stargate... when it was on Showtime, naturally) and Flash Gordon.

Why am I guessing there was a small, awkward pause before the interviewer managed to choke out his reply?
Of course, that's my opinion sneaking in since I couldn't stand more than five minutes of either show.

I think what he's trying to say is; "Animation is really expensive, and we couldn't charge enough for Tripping The Rift airtime to justify airing it, as opposed to airing endless reruns of Quantum Leap. Now, thanks to Endless reruns of Stargate, Battlestar, and the money we won't be spending on Dr. Who, we can produce animation again. But like all network executives, we don't get MST 3-K.

YES this statement was stupid. Especially considering how long it lasted on Sci-Fi.
Yes I called it Sci-Fi.

-10 years on national cable channels -1 theatrical release movie -16 volumes of DVD releases (and counting) -Two seperate, successful projects in the same spirit by the show's cast running today
If they did all that with a fanbase that was only watching 12-17% of any given episode, more power to them.

But hey, I'm sure "Outer Space Astronauts" will be even bigger than MST3K.
It's amazing the level of disrespect MST3K gets from the suits. For a show that was so cheap to make, filled up two hours of programming, and would always have respectable-to-decent ratings, you'd think the networks would have been frothing at the mouth to keep it on. But the problem is that humor is subjective, and network executives are humorless twits.
