But hey, I'm sure "Outer Space Astronauts" will be even bigger than MST3K. It's amazing the level of disrespect MST3K gets from the suits. For a show that was so cheap to make, filled up two hours of programming, and would always have respectable-to-decent ratings, you'd think the networks would have been frothing at the mouth to keep it on. But the problem is that humor is subjective, and network executives are humorless twits. Well, there are two problems: 1)Keeping the movie rights. Sure, some of them may be cheap to get at first, because how little they're known, but after MST, their prices go up. Or some people refuse to give them back out, like Sandy Frank did. 2)Filling up two hours of programming time.

There's always DVDs and Rifftrax to keep it going in some form or another. Hell, I just MSTed an episode of that cruddy Legend of Zelda cartoon while I was watching it on Hulu, so EXCCCCCCCUUUUUUUSSSSEEEE me, network exec!
On the other hand, Comedy Central's leadership should get as much flak as Syfy's because they cancelled it first.

I kinda worried for MST's future back then when commercials for South Park first started up.

-10 years on national cable channels -1 theatrical release movie -16 volumes of DVD releases (and counting) -Two seperate, successful projects in the same spirit by the show's cast running today If they did all that with a fanbase that was only watching 12-17% of any given episode, more power to them. They also were an inspiration for Cheap Seats, which Mike and the Bots appeared on. The shot at MST3K is ridiculous. He obviously didn't think before he talked. I don't hate the SciFi Original Movies, I kind of like them. Some of them are a callback to some of the crappy b-movies that were around years ago. How can you hate movies like Mansquito? Also, they better keep Eureka and Warehouse 13 around. Because if they cancel those, I'm going to be pissed. I didn't mind Ghost Hunters, but they've kind of overexposed it. They don't need to show it as much as they do. How about showing an hour of Twilight Zone every night like they used to? Now you only get the Zone on Holiday Marathons.

Well, Sci-Fi always branched out by including horror. Besides, while niche networks need a broader viewership, they also can't risk alienating that core audience that should always remain the bedrock of their base.

To play devil's advocate here, he did say it was a funny show. I think he's wrong on the 15 to 20 minutes thing, but I can't take him seriously when he mentions those horrible B movies and plays up the fact that they're basically crap. Whoever watches an entire movie called Sharktopus is someone I don't want anywhere near me.

Well, he says it's a funny show because he's a soulless network executive who never deals with absolutes. But he basically trashes MST3K in favor of the televised fecal matter he currently oversees, which surely won't be winning any Peabody Awards soon.*
What I find endlessly amusing about this (as someone who's worked in television and dealt with these asses) is that I literally can't sit through fifteen minutes of their newest jewel in the Syfy crown: Stargate Universe. It's one of the most uneven, flat, uninspired pieces of idiot groupthink I've ever seen (and again, this is coming from someone who loved the Stargate franchise ten years ago).
*Well, the Peabody Award-winning team of BSG is doing Caprica, but that's more a stroke of luck than anything else.

Ways to insult your fanbase:
1) Say they have short attention spans.
2) Doesn't matter, they have short attention spans.

*Takes off jacket.
...is he f***ing kidding me?
Stargate Universe sucks. Tinman sucked. Alice sucked even more cause it was the same f***ing movie with a different cast. And their new films with mutated beavers near the South American border "Hot Dam" will suck even friggin' more.
You know, I liked it when these companies were faceless and the heads never said a word. I see a face now and hear the pure gibberish this man is spewing, I want to punch him in the back of the head and scissor kick him in the mouth.
Hey, mathias, I'm a fan of MST3K and I watch the ENTIRE show the whole way through because it's funnier than watching a bunch of peckerwoods stumbling through a Scottish castle scaring each other or...
Outer Space Astronauts.
Are you f***ing kidding me?!! Have you seen this?!! THIS what they show and they insult MST3K and actual science fiction programming??!!!
...want to hurt this man...

I don't get what the attractive hook for Universe was supposed to be. OK there was Stargate, and then Atlantis was basically Voyager meets Stargate. Fine, whatever. So what is Universe? Enterprise? Yeech. Never watched it, but the show sounds boring. Like J.A.G.

Yeah, but at least J.A.G. had that one hot lady in it. You know the one. And it kind of had a funny name that you could create dirty puns with, in relation to what you'd be doing while watching that one hot lady. But what does Stargate Universe have? A funny name? No, that was Battlestar Galactica (and that was awesome). Hot ladies? Not really. And if you're not going to bother with creating a plot, interesting characters, or an actual story besides sitting around in a dark tube in space, you better give me some hot ladies and funny names or I'm bolting.

Besides, while niche networks need a broader viewership, they also can't risk alienating that core audience that should always remain the bedrock of their base. I guess what irritates me is, these people start a niche network but then aren't willing to accept niche-network-sized ratings and revenue. Don't start a Sci-Fi or a TV Land or something, expect it to bring in top-tier revenue, and then change the format when your unreasonable expectations weren't met. It just screws with everyone who actually wanted the original concept.

Exactly. Especially in this day and age. There's a lot more profit to be had in just remaining a small outfit and producing specialized hits that will endure rather then diluting your "brand" in an attempt to become the next USA (which is never the original intent, but always comes about when a new executive comes into power and isn't happy about their current situation of running a specialty cable outlet).
ARGH!

Now you only get the Zone on Holiday Marathons. the fact that none of the non-obscure channels seem to show any Zone is upsetting. If someone created a 'classic sci-fi' channel, that would be amazing. You could have MST3k, some older movies(both quality and so-bad-its-good), Twilight Zone, and then maybe some other shows like The Outer Limits, X-files, Twin Peaks(not really a sci-fi show, but dammit, it needs to be on more TV networks), and you'd have a kickass network. It'd be awesome if they could somehow pull in better ratings than SyFy

He somewhat has a point Even though the cast of MST3K is funny it's still a show about making fun of bad movies Which hits the obvious drawback of the fact that to watch the show you also have to watch that Bad Movie and I know I can't be the only who just found a few of the movies MST3K's riffed on just plain hard to sit through

There were some episodes that are worse than others. But the same can be said for just about any TV show. There are episodes of the Simpsons from the 'golden era' that I usually refuse to watch because I find them so unfunny compared to the ones around them. Now, if he had just said something like "Nothing against MST3K or its fans, but it is a niche show with a niche following, and we are trying to appeal to a broader scope", then that would be perfectly acceptable because it is: A) True. Fans of MST3K do make up a small portion of the TV viewing audience. And that is if EVERY MST3K fan watched EVERY broadcast of the show, which would just be impossible. So really the viewership would be a decent chuck of a small fraction of their potential audience. B) It doesn't insult anyone. Saying something isn't mainstream isn't an insult in the least(at least in my opinion). Saying that it really isn't all that funny and anyone who's watched it for more than 15 minutes should realize that is, because not only are you saying that its not funny, you're also basically calling everyone who's watched and enjoyed it stupid.
