I'll agree that Gload and Castillo can't be worse than Bruntlett, who makes Mendoza go "Damn that average blows" and Stairs, who hits one homerun for every 20 outs. The bench would be even better if Charlie game some of them a start once in a while. Dobbs can play 3rd to give Polanco a rest or have Poly move over to 2B to give Utley a rest. Francisco should get at least 1 start per week in the outfield. He could fill in for all 3 of our OFers. This has to start at the beginning of the year so it keeps some of our regulars fresh going down the stretch and it helps our bench stay in the groove. To be fair to guys like Bruntlett and Stairs, it's damn near impossible to be productive when you may only get 1-2 at bats per week. Yeah the flexibility is much better from the bench this year. Stairs couldn't start much though because he's too much of a liability on defense. And even when he started, Bruntlett wasn't tearing the world up. I understand why he stuck with the starting 8 as much as he did, but hopefully this year he'll pace them out to save them for the postseason. I'm just hoping that they money they saved on the bench goes to getting another reliable reliever in. Or at least one who won't be on the DL in September.
