My girlfriend absolutely loves the series, so out of curiosity I borrowed the first book from her.
Let me start by saying, I still love my girlfriend. And I think that's a testament in my favor.
I'd read somewhere that Stephen King publicly said Stephenie Meyer wasn't a very good writer. And damn, he wasn't kidding. It felt like I was reading something churned out by a teenager. Hell, scratch that, my sister's a teenager, and her term papers are better written than this thing. I could go into the endless list of things Miss Meyer does that just SCREAM poor writing, but it would just take too damn long.
Add to that where Bella (the narrator) talks about how beautiful Edward is ALL THE DAMN TIME. And I'm not exaggerating when I say that, either. She literally found some way to work it in EVERY OTHER SENTENCE.
*Note to Bella/Stephenie: I GET IT! HE'S GOOD-LOOKING!!!
Not to mention the fact I hate Bella now. See, in the movie, I thought Edward was a wimp. And, honestly, I still do. But at least now I GET why he's so wimpy. As for Bella, she's really a bit of a self-absorbed bitch. "Oh, look at me! I'm not the popular girl in school! But all the boys like me here in Forks! Cuz I'm just so cool."
Anyhoo, I shan't be reading Book 2. I'll suffer through the films alongside my lady, holding in the vomit that will no doubt creep up my throat as I hear fat, old women whistle at Jacob prancing around shirtless like John Cena. Cuz that's what you do for the people you care about.
But reading more than one book by Stephenie Meyer is just asking too much. Thankfull, I don't think my lady will push it. She's a good girlfriend.

Why'd they get Mac Tonight stand in Robert Pattinson to play him?

Yea, I recently read the first two books out of curiosity as well. One of my roommates is a massive fan, and I finally gave into her badgering me about reading them.
I agree on them being badly written. Like, really bad. You compared it to your sister, I'll compare it to mine. Mine is in 5th grade, and its almost like I was reading a book that she sat down with a thesaurus and wrote. Does she really have to follow everything that Edward says with some form of "said Edward, staring at me with his unfairly beautiful gaze"?
But I can look past that, I mean, after a while, the writing stopped getting under my skin. What bugs me most about the first book is that there are literally zero subplots of any substance. All it is, is the same two characters, having the same conversation over and over and over again, spread over a few hundred pages. That was the worst part of it all for me.
My roommate asked me to list out a few positives I can think of from the book. And nothing really came to mind at all. BUT, with that said, I dont hate it. I dont know why I dont hate it, but I dont. I dont LIKE it, but I dont hate it. It has an odd charm about it that prevents me from hating it.
Its one of those things where I have no idea why or how it got as big as it did, cause I dont think it deserves it. But at the same time, terrible writing be damned, I dont think it deserves all the hate it gets either.
Also, a few random notes.
1. Having seen the New Moon movie, I can safely say that Id rather read the book 1000 times than suffer thru the movie again. If people judge Twilight simply off of the movies, then I totally understand the hate.
2. Pattinson is one of the best casting choices in recent memory. Seriously. He's PERFECT for what Edward is in the books. There are very few movies I can think of where theres been a better casting choice for a novel's source material. I hear people complaining about Pattinson being terrible in the movies, but I think he played it perfectly for what the role asks for and requires. I actually like all of the actors in the movies. Theyre just held back by bad writing and source material imo.

She literally found some way to work it in EVERY OTHER SENTENCE. *Note to Bella/Stephenie: I GET IT! HE'S GOOD-LOOKING!!! This is incredibly annoying and it happens all the time. Anyone who has read the book is so brainwashed by the "this is the most gorgeous man ever!!!" writing that they could have pretty much got any average looking guy to play Edward in the movie and he would be nominated sexiest man in the world by all the magazines. Not to mention the fact I hate Bella now. See, in the movie, I thought Edward was a wimp. And, honestly, I still do. But at least now I GET why he's so wimpy. Plus she's meant to be unpopular but suddenly has a ton of friends straight away. She then proceeds to constantly ignore them in favour of Edward and always acts completely miserable when she does spend time with them even though they are always super nice to her. What a bitch.

Haha I agree. That was one of the mock "positives" that I gave to my roommate. Its a great motivational tool. Gives writers an ego boost and gets them writing, cause they know theyre probably better.

As some of you know, I'm the one of the main Twilight Defenders on this board...but I have to be honest...when I read the books, I latched onto the characters of Alice and Emmette and don't really give a damn about anyone else. I completely understand the hatred for the Bella character and certainly share some of it myself.

When I tried reading it to appease a ladyfriend as well, my biggest complaint was that when I turned the tables on her and asked her to tell me what it was about the books she found so good, the answers she gave really didn't make any sense to me.
If the answer was simply "I'm a sucker for sappy romances with unrealistically beautiful sounding male leads", then fine, but don't try to convince me that Bella is some sort of "courageous" figure or that Edward was a deep character.
It would be like me saying that the reason I like the movie The Last Dragon is because it's filled with complex characters and delves into serious philosophical issues, instead of the true reason, which is that I like it because "LEROOOOOOOY...WHO IS THE BAAAAAAADEEEEEEEST?!?!"

Ah yes, The Last Dragon. Challenge yourself some time and watch that and then Black Belt Jones back to back. I dare ya ... ;D Anyway, this is all I have to contribute to this thread ...

You leave Steve Buscemi out of this. The man is a god. It'd be his little bitch and I'm straight.

These books and movies are basically thinly veiled superhero books written from a female friendly perspective. Nothing wrong with them, except that message boards such as these are mostly men, who the books are not written for. If Twilight became a comic book, I think it would be a huge chance for the traditional comic book makers to reach a female audience, who historically spend more than men (it's why Titanic is the highest grossing movie ever).
As to why women love this. The lead female is pursued by two men who she perceives are gorgeous and they are madly in love with her. What heterosexual woman wouldn't love it?

Like I said before, I like tons of cheesy things, too. Acting like it's anything other than escapist fluff and trying to assign deeper meanings to it is a different story, though

I was actually wondering something, and I didn't want to make a thread, but....
It's a world with vampires and werewolves, right? So, where are the monster hunters? I mean, if we have vampires going around a public area with werewolves, starting epic fights, don't you think we'd have some kind of Patrick Van Helsing or something going around trying to track them down? Would it be like a Frog Brother from Lost Boys, or go the route she already went, and make it another woman who wants Edward for herself. What about that?
