Right now I think its fair to say that the WWE is striving to create new main eventers.
Kofi Kingston, John Morrison, Christian, the Miz, Legacy are amoung those who seem to be destined for the main event in the coming year or so.
So I wonder when did everyone start viewing today's crop of main eventers as bona fide main eventers, as in when did you know that a certain guy was main event and staying main event. That no matter what program they were in they could immediatley be in a main event feud and you wouldn't bat an eyelid.
For example Chris Benoit, despite winning a main event at Wrestlemania and holding a world title for a few months just never seemed a main eventer ever to me. He always seemed to just be a solid upper midcarder who occasionly fought the main event superstars here and there.
Here are my thoughts;
Undertaker- Pretty much after his feud with Hogan and first albeit short championship reign.
Shawn Michaels- During his first championship run in 1996.
Triple H- After his feud with the Rock mid 2000.
John Cena- Wrestlemania 21, the culmination of his mega push.
Randy Orton- Upon winning the WWE title in late 2007 after Cena's injury. For me it actually took ages for Orton to fully achieve main event status.
Batista- Upon his return from injury in 2006 when he went after King Booker for the WHC.
Edge- When he jumped to Smackdown to win the WHC with Taker's injury in May 2007, I knew Edge was main event for good.
Chris Jericho- Not until the feuds with Michaels and Cena last year, coupled with SRS makeover.
Big Show- A tough one to pinpoint, as Show's postion on the card has changed so drastically over the years, if I had to I would say after his WWF title run in late 1999. After that he was never far away from the main event.
I've omitted Kane and Rey Mysterio as I feel that they have always been used to put over the main event rather than actually be in it consistently. You may argue the same case for Big Show.
Also in the future I feel that I will look back on these months right now as the time that solidified Punk as a main eventer, but he's not there yet.
