Internet. Cars only opened us to the rest of the country we are in plus any countries immediately attached to ours. The internet allows us to basically "travel" the globe instantly and from the comfort of our home.
Let's put it like this, for the US, cars only allowed us access to the rest of the continental US, Canada, Mexico, and the countries within continental Central and South America.
The internet allows Americans to interact with people in places like the UK, China, Singapore, Japan, Australia, Nigeria, and even Hawaii, the only state, we can't drive to.

Internet connected the world and gave us almost limitless access to information, other cultures, and other people.

The Internet will break down most national communication barriers and won't be replaced. Cars will ultimately be replaced by another transportation system and only allow travel over land.

It would still have wheels and go places but the tech would be radically different that internal combustion passenger cars of today.

Without cars it would take forever to get the raw materials needed to assemble the computer, then another forever to get those computers to the store, then one more forever for you take a walk down to the store and carry the damn thing home. I suppose you could bicycle the thing.
I'd still rather drive coast to coast then put my car on a ship and go drive around the world. So far as I would have the money to do it.

I love the Internet, but it's nothing more than a luxory. You actually NEED cars at some point in your life.

The Internet will break down most national communication barriers and won't be replaced. Cars will ultimately be replaced by another transportation system and only allow travel over land. Yes, but you wouldn't get the 'next step' without the 'intermediate step' of car. Plus there's so many other changes to society that follow from that, widespread use of the internet included that wouldn't have happened, at least not in the way they did without cars and trucks. So for me, car is the answer. As was said, in this day and age, you can live without the internet ( I wouldn't want to, but as far as necessity goes it's not quite up there... yet, which is not to say it won't be someday); but you'd be hard-pressed to make any sort of living without an automobile. If not yourself owning one then having one somehow at your disposal.

Perhaps i'm being ignorant, but, can you drive to Alaska? I mean, I know you can see Russia from there, but I though it was detached from the mainland.

You can drive through Canada to Alaska. It is still attached to the North American continent. Hawaii is the only state not directly attached to the North American mainland. You'd have to fly or take a boat to it.

No cars = farm life and villages. You know we did have cities before automobiles, right? Big ones with tall buildings and everything! In fact, in many of these cities, people go their entire lives without owning their own car because they can get around in a variety of other ways (the poll said cars, not internal combustion engines, but even then). Without cars, we wouldn't have suburbs and drive thrus and cities would be closer to rural areas. Cities wouldn't somehow not exist without them. That's not to say they weren't a big invention, but they're not the only way people had to get around. The internet allows Americans to interact with people in places like the UK, China, Singapore, Japan, Australia, Nigeria, and even Hawaii, the only state, we can't drive to. Perhaps i'm being ignorant, but, can you drive to Alaska? I mean, I know you can see Russia from there, but I though it was detached from the mainland. yes, but you have to go through Canada. It's not connected to the continental US, it's west of Canada.

Car. I can live with the internet but I would never want to live without a car. That's my stance. I could go back to a time where there was no internet (the 80s) and live just fine. Hell, I lived without the internet for the first 12-13 years of my life, I could do it for the last 60 or so.

Without cars all the neat stuff I order from Amazon would take forever to get to my house, what with Pony Express and all.
