Was there ever an episode of the Simpsons when Homer was just flat out fired from the nuclear plant? I know he has been fired but came back towards the end, but for the longest time now he's never gone back and just has random jobs of the week.
Did I miss the final firing episode or does he actually still work there and I just haven't noticed?

He still works there. In the last episode, he was gonna quit it, but stayed for tasty donuts.

Yeah, nothing changes permanently on the show. I'm still waiting for Maude Flanders to come back at some point. You know it'll happen.

Recent seasons seemed to remember that he works there.

I forget which episode it was but they did mention this. Homer is telling Carl and Lenny something and then Homer runs off. And Carl says "So...does he still work here or what?"

The last couple of first run episodes had or mentioned Homer working at the Plant.
In fact one of the episodes was about Carl getting promoted and Homer becoming his PA.

I remember way back around season 10 or 11 Bart asked "Do you even have a job anymore?" to which Homer replied "I think it's pretty obvious that I don't."
