Dad got it for Christmas, and now I want to talk about a movie that was released six months ago.
Things we can discuss;
How it was completely different than what I expected.
How awesome was the Bear Jew.
How Christoph Waltz deserves every award in the book.
Amongst other things. Any takers?

I believe i'm the only one on the planet that thinks that as well done as the bar scene in the middle of the movie was, it still should've been cut a good 10-15 minutes. I almost kind of died of boredom there.
Otherwise, I believe that it's an excellent movie, one of my faves from QT. And hell to the yes on the fact that Christoph Waltz deserves EVERY award he gets nominated for.

"I'm callin' the Bear Jew over here, and he's gonna take that big-ole bat of his, and he's gonna beat you to death with it. Now take your wiener schnitzel lickin' finger and point out on this map what I want to know."
Yes!

I really didn't like it
The first scene with the Nazi dude (Jew hunter or whatever his name was) & the farmer, & the introduction of the Bastards was awesome but after than I thought it completly fell apart

My only complaint is that I had a really hard time caring for/sympathizing for Shosanna. She was hot, and that first scene should've made it so easy to feel for her considering how amazing it was, but she just came off very flat for me. Apart from that I loved everything, has probably my favorite overall-acting of any Tarantino film and not just because of the Hans Landa character.
That said, Christoph Waltz should win Best Actor ..... AND Best Supporting Actor.
Just because.

I almost kind of died of boredom there. I think they could have shaved a great deal off the card games. Even if you don't know the game, it wouldn't be too hard to pick up on, so the Major's explanation felt really unnecessary. Maybe the ugly chick didn't need to do her mata hari dance. But in general, I like that for pretty much all of the chapters, the entire time is spent building up the tension like a tight rope, until the chapter's finale, when everything snaps. Its like that for the first four chapters, tension building, little bits of the rope snapping, until the grand finale of it all, when the tension breaks entirely. Its a really great effect and feeling.

My only complaint is that I had a really hard time caring for/sympathizing for Shosanna. I'd argue that you're not really supposed to sympathize with Shosanna (or anyone in the movie, for that matter...maybe the dairy farmer at the beginning, and his daughters), because while her predicament is understandable, she turns to a cold blooded revenge taker, just like the Basterds do. She turns Fredrick away (with good reason, as evident near the end) out of spite, threatened to kill the recorder for not helping her with her revenge plot, and basically killed 300 Germans she'd never met in cold blood. There's really no one in the movie to cheer for, which is anomaly, but a good one. Well, I kind of pulled for B.J. Novak. "My...my name's the Little Man?"

I totally understood that, which is why I also added in the caring part. Sympathize was the wrong word, but her character wasn't even engaging, which is something that pretty much every other character in the film made me do. Sure you're not supposed to sympathize or relate to Aldo, or Landa or Von Hammersmark or Zoller, but they were engaging characters nevertheless and that made you care about them and what they did. Shosanna was just there for me, which is my only complaint for how much she played a role in the film. All that said, it's still an amazing film. My 2nd favorite in Tarantino's catalog having seen them all now.

I may need to rewatch Resevoir Dogs just to make sure, but Basterds just wound up blowing my mind.

Bold move Dave. Pulp Fiction is still first for me, there's just nothing in it that I can think of that I didn't enjoy. I will say though that Basterds has my favorite opening scene out of any Tarantino flick, as well as maaaaybe my favorite ending. The climax just blows you away, and though it's not original the Morricone riff at the end is just perfectly done.
Hyped as I was to see it, I didn't think it was going to be this good. The trailer makes it seem like a splatter-blood half-comedy (which to a small degree it is) that I would've enjoyed regardless, but I was just left amazed at how it all played out. For me it goes:
Pulp Fiction > Inglorious Basterds > Kill Bill 1 > Reservoir Dogs > Kill Bill 2 > Jackie Brown >>>>> Death Proof.

I really enjoyed Brad Pitt here.
Some bits and pieces felt elongated and tiresome, but everything built up the pay-off at the end... so it was worth it.
Great film.

"You know, fightin' in a basement offers a lot of difficulties. Number one being, you're fightin' in a basement."
I LOVED Pitt here. Literally everything Raine does or says is memorable.
"Bun-jer-no."

Right now, I have Basterds and Reservoir Dogs tied for my top 2 QT films but I need to rewatch Basterds on DVD to make sure it wasn't the theater experience as a whole. As it stands: Inglourious Basterds > Reservoir Dogs > Kill Bill 1 > Kill Bill 2 > Pulp Fiction > Jackie Brown > Death Proof
