Going to go see this movie tonight with my mates, in 3D of course. I can't remember the last time I was this excited to see a movie. I shall let everyone know what I think of it (because my opinions matter to you people ). And since I didn't see one, I figured this could be the thread for all Avatar based discussion.

You know, an (ultra) big budget CGI movie must be something (whatever that "something" is) when Roger Ebert, the New York Times, the New Yorker, and L.A. Times......mainstream critics less nerds and more the stereotypical elitist critics*....all went gaga for this movie. In fact higher at metacritic than The Dark Knight. I mean wow umm, yeah.
I mean Ebert wrote the best praise: "There is still at least one man in Hollywood who knows how to spend $250 million, or was it $300 million, wisely. " Memo that to Michael Bay, pronto!
*=Except for Ebert I suppose. He's the layman of that clique.

My friend works at a local movie theater.
For tonight's midnight showings, the IMAX theater has sold about half its tickets, the 3D showings have sold just below half and the 2D showings are around a quarter sold. They've got a ton of staff and it looks like a lot of them will be standing around. May be isolated, but he was expecting this to be Twilight for geeks (well, male geeks).

I checked and, according to Fandago.com, I could buy a ticket to any of the Avatar showings at 12:01 AM and anytime tomorrow for any of the settings. Maybe my area doesn't like this movie at all, but he texted me saying they are 75% in the IMAX, 60% in one 3D and 50% in the other and really bad in the 2D screens. Again, its all anecdotal and amounts to nothing, I just was surprised they didn't get hit nearly as bad as they thought. Then again, there's not half naked sparkly vampires on the screen..... Just Blue Boobs.

The Onion gave it a C, and as far as accuracy goes they usually get it right.

Going to see it Saturday it looks like. I'm interested in it a little bit, but the hype is going overboard...two weeks ago. "Movies will never be the same." COME ON.

I really hate that trend when it comes to advertising movies. It really only bothered me the first time when I saw a preview for a The Blind Side and it said something along the lines of "It will be the single greatest sports movie for years to come". I mean, how does that logic hold up(especially considering, eh, the blind side only looked average ) Anyway, back on topic, based on the trailers(and Cameron's insane e3 rantings), this movie could easily go one of two ways; Epic Sci-Fi adventure, or over-ambitious clustf***. I can honestly see it going either way. It'll shoot up to the top of my queue when it comes out on BR

I might see it this weekend. Am I the only one who would chuckle if Al Snow had a cameo in the movie? He was Avatar you know.

I laughed when I saw the trailer and like a lot of people, I thought the film looked pants-on-your-head stupid. Yesterday,I was begrudginly dragged along to see it with my friends, and y'know what I really really liked it.
It was visually amazing and the story (though done before) was told really well. As someone who was a major skeptic of it, I wholeheartedly recommend to go see Avatar.

I'm taking a friend who walked out on Watchmen for that reason. Don't want that again.

And we had set up guide rails for a HUGE line, like as said, roughly the same length as the line we set up for New Moon. But it would not be. Hardly anyone showed up. Hell, prior to like.....11:30, only 10 or so people were lined up. Then we had only another hundred or so people show up. So....um...yeah, it may have reviewed better than Dark Knight, but it is definitely not making more money than Dark Knight.

So....um...yeah, it may have reviewed better than Dark Knight, but it is definitely not making more money than Dark Knight. Looks like it did the same everywhere, as it only raked in a very meager $3 million at the midnight showings (New Moon made $24 million, TDK made about $19 milion to put it in context). It could bounce back, and it will no doubt be the #1 film this weekend, but it doesn't look like it will break many records. My friend said there's a ton of people at the mall, but no one coming to the theaters. The 5:00 PM showing is the first one they sold out in IMAX, but every other showing has been 50% full max and the 2D shows may not have a long run because no one wants to waste time with it unless they think they're going to get sick. Speaking of which, there's been a small number of people leaving theaters and asking for refunds, as they've gotten motion sick watching it. I probably won't see it, but I'm really interested in the box office it pulls in for some reason.

Alright saw it last night, the theatre was pretty damn packed. But this movie is amazing. The story really does remind you of Dances With Wolves, however it's still expertly told, however this movie does something that DWW never did. This movie actually sucks you into their World, you feel for the Nav'i and what they have to go through, you feel the struggle Jake has to face and... {Spoiler}You can clearly tell how the humans are the bad guys despite having their own honest agenda Going into this film I was pretty much convince it was going to be either absolutely terrible, or simply amazing. I'm glad to say it was the latter. Go see this movie, see it in 3D if possible. The 3D might not be a necessity but it really help make you feel more drawn to the movie, it's the little things in 3D that suck you in, like drops of water, pollen etc. Definite thumbs up.
