Just go with me here, people. Open those minds.
So, I was just bouncing around Wikipedia today, looking up random things and happened to land on Forrest Griffin's page.
His first career fight was a loss to Dan "The Beast" Severn, well known for being one of the first UFC Champions, being a WWE Superstar, and for possessing little to no charisma.
Here's the thing though.
Despite being 51 years of age, Dan Severn still competes in MMA (His last fight actually took place October 24 of this year. He won via Corner Stoppage). In fact, since being inducted in the UFC Hall of Fame at UFC 52 on April 16, 2005, he has had 29 more fights, winning 25 of them (17 by submission).
So...the "What If"
What if the UFC brought Dan Severn in for one more Octagon fight?
Crazy right? I semi-think that it could possibly work. I'm not saying he'd be the main event of a PPV. Just part of the card.
They could play off his "Legendary" status. "A UFC Hall of Famer returns to the Octagon to test the new blood."
They could talk about his ever continuing success in the sport. He's had over 100 fights (116 to be exact) and has 91 wins with 56 Submissions. Fifty-Six Submissions! They could hype that alone "Some people never have 50 fights, let alone 50 submission victories!"
They could play off his wrestling ability. "Sure, you'd expect the younger, faster guy to rush in there and finish him, but he's a world class wrestler and could very easily take this to the ground where his stamina could make all the difference." (Maybe briefly mention the dreaded 30 minute decision victory over Shamrock. It'd be fun to hear about it in a positive way...)
They could get Forrest Griffin to talk about him. "He welcomed me into the sport by making my first fight, my first loss."
They could use random factoids that are kind of impressive, "He's the only UFC Triple Crown Champion." (Got that from Dan's "Official" Website)
All else fail, go into crazy hyerbole mode. "It's Dan 'The Beast' Severn. He's fought the greatest. He's beat the greatest. And even with his age, he's still got a high-caliber submission game"
So...What If?
Who would they put against him?
Could it actually be pulled off?
Could he actually win?!
Do I need to take my medication, Morty?
